Am I the only person here who doesn't particularly notice continuity announcers.

Well surely that's the problem? Wink

Maybe you should listen carefully to the content, construction and delivery of some links from some ITV announcers and then you would realise what we are talking about.

But if Brekkie is more representative of the 'average joe' it doesn't really matter.

Without being disrespectful, if you're a member of this forum then you're not really going to be representive of the 'average joe'...and I mean that in a good way (believe it or not). Thumbs up

But in the respect of not taking in the announcers I highly suspect Brekkie is more representative of the public on that point and that's my point!

Never thought I'd see the phrase "highly respect Brekkie" posted here.

Is it a generational thing too - do the people who grew up with more in-vision continuity still notice the CAs much more. I just about missed that - remember the odd bit on Granada but nothing much, and to me they were still just the people introducing the content, not the stars of the channel.

It's easy to forget in this place especially that despite the millions often spent on rebrands that often the general public don't really notice - just look at BBC2. They've got away with reintroducing 20 year old idents and outside of this place barely anyone has batted an eye lid.

Am I the only person here who doesn't particularly notice continuity announcers. Yes, C4 have a couple who are a bit more fun than most, as do E4, while the really bad ones will stand out, but on the whole I see no issue with the folk at ITV. The only time CAs really annoy me is when they basically reveal the whole plot in the intro to a show or speak every 15 seconds during a breakdown!

To what end? They're CA links, not performances at the Royal Albert Hall.

It was in fairness a typo. But despite the stick you've received over the years you are often a voice of common sense.

I don't think it's a generational thing as I'm (slightly) too young to remember when Central did their in-vision Continuity. I just feel that last night on ITV the Announcer was poor.

BTW I agree with Jon, that generally you speak a lot of sense though everyone has their moments of course. The same applies to Jon himself much of the time too...

I am of an age where I should be able to remember ITV in vision continuity, except I grew up in Yorkshire, where we had the very odd practice of using programme slides to introduce programmes rather than an ident.

Watching a grainy Granada when the weather was favourable was a revelation.

70s and 80s until the 1987 gold ident?

I still don't buy the 'no one cares' theory. Yes, people may care less and not pay specific attention unlike people on here but if it was widely believed no one cared, TV stations, in turn, wouldn't care as much as they do about their branding. Do you care about the design of the wrapping on your chocolate bar? Perhaps so long as it tastes nice, you'd argue the wrapper's irrelevant but if that was really the case for most people, surely wrappers would just be plain, a bit like the old plain white No Frills stuff that you used to see at Kwik Save, although even that was technically a brand, as its blandness was a deliberate statement.

As for BBC Two, I'd say them "getting away with it" is more of a testament of the design quality of the old idents, aided by the relative mediocrity of what it usurped. Also, the odd person has mentioned them in passing, if conversation tilts that way, saying things like "the old logos are back". No doubt many people under 18 or so think they're new.
