Perhaps not region specific, but a slightly bigger choice of idents which could be used or not used depending on the region.
It just seemed slightly odd to me that of all the regions, they chose LWT to represent that ident in the showreel.
The 1989 generic ident was similar: Big Ben on Grampian?
Region-specific films may have worked better but would not doubt have bumped up the cost of the package considerably.

Can't say as I was a fan of it, it didn't represent ITV's best era in programming and continuity, and it never even launched correctly from day one, it says it all when the whole ident package was delayed by a year. I know the 1989 logo would have been difficult to emulate for ITV2, but I'd rather the 1989 logo hang on a bit longer, it was rather flexible, shown by some of the latter generic-y idents produced by Carlton and the overnight idents on UNM Regions.
I really hated that 1998 logo.

ITV2 didn't need to launch with the same logo as ITV1 anyway. ITV4 introduced the 2006 logo a few months early. ITV2 could've easily done the same with the 1998 logo. And look at Channel 4. Their digital channels all have 4 in the name, but only Film Four's original identity ever used the blocks. Their later logos and those of E4, More4, and 4Music didn't.

Talk about difficult... and rather ugly, too:

By that point though, the whole idea of putting an object into the logo was pretty much dead (Grampian being the only station still using it to that effect by the end of its run). I don't think the logo really needed to do anything, and I always thought that the 1989 logo really shone through the strand specific idents they did for CITV, ITV Sport and Drama. Still, the idents they made for the regions completely shot down the ones from 10 years later, and in its original guise was much more bold and versatile than its current day equivalent.

It must be stressed, Grampian were still using Invision CA, for nearly all jcts, which meant the ITV ident only come out mainly before the news.

That's more down to your mocking skill rather than it being an inherent problem. Speaking of which, why do you keep having to punctuate posts with a mock you've knocked up? That's what The Gallery's for.

The Gallery is for complete mock pres packages, not odds and ends that just come up during discussion - nwtv2003 mentioned adapting the 1989 logo for ITV2... that was a challenge I couldn't resist. Of course a professional mocker like you could do better...
... as long as it's in The Gallery, of course
