These gems come up every so often, but there are strange.

Thanks for posting this - some of those early clips are definitely higher quality than before.
I also haven't seen that mock-up Granada continuity announcement before either, although it's wrong as it leads into Coronation Street instead of the documentary. Presumably created to show how it would work leading into a programme.
However all those ones from 9:22 onwards have been on the TVA website for a number of years now. Still, lots of interesting clips before that that I haven't seen before.

Can understand why the end board was dropped (up to 4 channel identifiers on screen is a bit much) but dropping the individual music for each ident was a huge mistake - can't understand how anyone thought that was a bad idea.
Calrton's own interpretation on the hearts was obviously better in the end but it's quite interesting essentially seeing the same ident concepts delivered in three different way - the musicless Carlton idents, the dropped individually tracked idents and the generic versions which made it to air. Would definately say the ones that made it to air were the weakest.
I don't know if this is the correct thread, but have found a great video on youtube containing cuts of unused ITV heart idents. Some have of course been seen before, but some haven't. Also the quality is better than those previously seen

Why do I see trailers with the 1989 logo on them with a 1998 endboard? Also, Anglia's recoloured logo looks awful, no wonder they kept their original colour scheme in the end.

Because it's a mock up (but not a 'mock') assembled from off air recordings. The ITV logo would have had to have been obscured; they probably just decided it wasn't worth the bother when they could explain/assume that the DOG would change.

The original plan with these was initially to use pure yellow station logos. I'm sure I saw an all-yellow LWT logo knocking about somewhere. Fortunately, common sense prevailed, although neither LWT or the Meridian logos looked quite right on the spinning hearts background. The likes of Granada's and Yorkshire's looked alright, though I think they could have done with making them a bit bigger.

No, but then a fairground doesn't exactly say "Border" either. That was always going to be a problem with a live action package which was supposed to simultaneously represent both a local and a national brand. Carlton's solution (if it had been offered to and accepted by the network) would have answered that by representing nothing (unless you read the accompanying marketing bumpf) but just looking distinctive and pretty.
Another problem I noticed rewatching that video, when it comes to creating a generic package for every region - a rural, black and white rainy train station doesn't exactly scream "London Weekend Television", does it?
