ITV and Channel 5 are planning to merge in an effort to cut costs, increase programming budgets while also streamlining their freeview operations, as part of a masterplan to make UKTV more competitive in the fast changing media world. One of the main reason for doing so, is to help transfer more channels in the long term to internet broadcasting and ondemand streams to compete with Netflix and newer players.
Such moves isn't cheap and more money is needed to be able to complete such a mammoth tasks without destroying programme budgets.
In the short term, the belief is ITV will move into the Channel 5 main building thus saving money for more programming, by cutting staffing levels and rent costs. A number of high profile shows would also move around the channels since all channel would be shuffled around, with Channel 5 being rebranded as ITV 5, and dealing with Documentaires only. ITV2 would be refocused as a second general entertainment and moved to Channel 5 slot on Freeview. Spike would be combined with ITV4, and thus freeing up the slot to be focused on the important ABC 20s-30 age group.
Sir Peter Bazalgette Has stated he is delighted such moves to streamline the current landscape, while Roger Faxon a Non-executive Director admits losing his job is a shame but it for the good of the company, while Viacom are happy to expand its claws in the UK market.
Within 5 years most channel bar ITV1 and 5 would be online streams only by April 2121......
