There's just so many soaps these days! Didn't they use to have there Monday schedule with Corrie, World in Action, Strike it Lucky and the Krypton Factor (not in that order)... and now there's a good two hours of soaps on ITV during a Monday evening.

Its ridiculous the amount of episodes of the soaps on ITV1 these days. In the 1980s/1990s on a Monday for example there was one episode of Corrie and around it were a variety of other shows. Now it seems its the others shows which fit in among the soaps!

You talk as if extra ones are added every week. It's been fixed at 5 Corries and 6 Emmerdale's for quite a while, I would have thought you would have got used to it by now. I also don't think there's been any extra episodes on top of that this year despite the threats "I wouldn't be surprised if.."

Its called having an opinion.

And I never said episodes are added every week - im comparing it to how it was 5-10 years ago in the mid-late 1990s.

You don't need a sopa to get decent ratings and to win the slot win in and week out - it takes imagination, guts, and money to produce something that people WILL want to watch that is not soap. It's happened in the past and will happen again - and its doesn't have to be drama based either.

The most perfect example being Only Fools and Horse - although I must be one of a very few group of people who actually dislikes the show but commend it for it being a ratings winner. Even Airline, if given a more decent time-slot, could actually garner more viewers than a soap. The lighter US/Oz Drama's on a Sunday gained more viewers that what Emmerdale or Coronation Street does now (and that does take into affect the downward spiral in viewing figures due to multichannel TV).

Its about being brave, taking the risks and most of all putting decent replacements on.

Remember Crossroads (mk1 - or mk2 if you want to call the Freeman/Lancaster era different from the Meg Mortimer era), they reduced that to 2 episodes a week long before it finished. Even Home and Away went down to 4 episodes a week, on ITV (due to the fact we were catching up very fast!!!!).

I agree, its just the easy option for them to stick soaps on all the time just because they get decent ratings. What would they do if viewing figures went down?

Corrie being on Five a week doesnt bother me at the moment because the show is of a high standard and the quality isnt affected however when Corrie has gone through a bit of a lull having 5 episodes a week really affects the quality so I think 3 or at the most 4 would be more suitable. Emmerdale having 6 is ridiculous, no other soap on UK tv or anywhere else in the World has 6 a week AFAIK.

Off topic - but with regards to Home and Away, ITV were so close to the Oz airings by the end they had to keep taking it off for breaks or reduce it to 4 a week for a period of time. This hasnt been a problem for Five due to them being a year behind when they started showing it, however I guess with us slowly catching up and now being just 4 months behind Oz five will have to take breaks soon.

How are we cacthing up with Home and away? don;t there show it 5 times a week? in OZ?

why did there cut it all over the place to catch up,

on topic, I say

I agree Emmerdale / Corrie - 3 each , Eastender 3 as well

also remember the lunchtime Moving to 1.30pm ( personnel that's the stupidest thing ITV did this year)

so it might happen

Five are catching up with Home and Away because it takes a lengthy break over Christmas.

Soaps - I've no problem with them being on five nights a week, but they shouldn't dominate the schedule. I've always said sticking Emmerdale and Corrie back to back in the 7pm hour would be best for ITV, freeing up it's 8pm hour for a more varied schedule.

We all know this thread is complete nonsense - but a sensible place to ask the question of how have ITV1's ratings been affected by the moving of the Lunchtime News to 1.30pm?

You can choose to believe me over this or not; it's up to you.

Its all very well for you to say, but when you dont quote a source for your information why should we believe you?

There is no source; if I divulge further information I will be compromising my job.

Believe me, we're not that interested that we would want someone risking their job. To be honest i'm not interested in ITV period Smile

The show takes 6 or 7 weeks off at the end of the year in Oz so we catch up by that amount each year. It isnt a problem as we are 4 months behind but ITV had no end of problems and had to take Home and Away off for breaks quite often or reduce it to 4 a week. Once we were only 4 episodes behind Oz!

Be interesting to see what FIVE do when they catch up with Oz - they will have to take a break at some point, however I cant see them doing what ITV did and moving it all over the place.

But if we dont count The Bill as a soap, only Corrie on a Monday at 8.30pm is shown after 8pm anyway. So get rid of that episode and problem solved.

It wouldn't free up the 8pm hour as they'd still need to schedule 2 editions of Tonight and 2 regional programmes within that hour

They could do that on a Monday and Friday showing Tonight at 8pm and regional at 8.30pm for example. Then they would have the Bill on Wed/Thurs and Football some Tuesdays. Might as well just leave it as it is. At leave 7.30pm-9pm has some variety at the moment.
