I agree, its not the name its a lot of the programmes that are the problem

Anyone who thinks ITV's biggest problem is it's name is very misguided!
I expect this article is more about the company, rather than the channel. I can't see ITV1,2 etc. getting a new name, but it wouldn't surprise me if ITV Plc rebranded.

Why do people on internet forums pick up the smallest of points, get it wrong and run away with it
All its says, regarding ITV PLC is "Sir Peter said "I wonder if we should change the name of the company from ITV. It would be easier if we were called something else."
So why there is 2 pages discussing changing the name of ITV1?

Can't argue with that! But this would be ITV Digital all over again; changing the name won't change the quality of the product.
In some ways, a change of name would be a kindness. To associate the name ITV with the current trash it pumps out is an insult to the glories of yesterday's genuine ITV.

Chav TV would be the most apt name.

Reckon you might have hit the nail on the head there, James.
Surely that's been part of the hidden agenda since the "merger".

Why don't they just rename ITVplc to Granada plc - as it should be. As it was Granada, in the end, that took over Carlton!
If they were ever to rename the TV channels (which I know they never will - which is just as likely as returning to the old franchise names) then it should be.....
ITV1 - ATV1 (with the old ATV logo updated) - 24 hours - general entertainment
ITV2 - ATV2 (with the old Central cake/moon updated) - 24 hours - general entertainment that supplements ATV1 - all new episodes of foreign drama's/shows to be on this channel
ITV3 - Granada Plus - 24 hours - classic british/pop culture programmes
ITV4 - Men and Motors - 24 hours - programmes aimed at men and includes sport
CITV - The Children's Channel (if they could buy the name from Flextech!) - 12 hours - children's programmes
ITV Play - close and create Granada Cinema - 12 hours - ITV owned films and feature-length drama's from both Granada UK and Granada USA)
In-house production company rebrand from ITV Productions to Granada Productions and produce everything from gameshows/comedies to hard hitting documentaries and includes children's programming

I can't see them doing that! It wouldn't exactly look like a portfolio of channels would it? Why do you think BBC changed CHOICE/KNOWLEDGE into BBC THREE/FOUR?
It's not the channel names that's the problem anyway. ITV3 has a strong image now, and ITV4 has it's niche audience too. ITV2 is also developing it's own identity successfully after initially being a "repeats channel". But ITV1 is suffering from poor commissioning and too much reliance on cheap "tabloid TV" and "celebrity this-and-that".
Their only problem is with ITV1 which is failing to draw the core audience it used to (apart from the Soaps). There is a distinct lack of ingenuity and willingness to experiement with new ideas - in fact new ideas are very few and far between!
Changeing the ITV plc name might be a good idea, if only to incorporate the fact that they have more than just a TV operation. They are moving into many other areas of media. It should be reflected in the name of the parent company - but not the subsidiary TV channels.

As Andrew rightly pointed out earlier, this most likely won't be a change of channel names - more the name of the company so that the city's outlook on it isn't so bleak. How they think they're going to pull that off is anybody's guess
