In the early days, ATV in Birmingham always took over as "nominated contractor" on Christmas Day (and possibly Boxing Day) to give the London crowd a holiday.

Hi Louis

C1 is used for Pobol y Cwm and the occasional Question Time, plus things like Welsh Sports Personality of the Year.

Cheers Dan. How many days per month, say, would Pobol y Cwm be in there?

Hi Louis,

They record on alternate weeks in C1 and the adjacent back-lot. The weeks in between the studio is available for other work while they're shooting location material.

As Dan said, it's the home of Question Time when in Cardiff, along with anything else requiring a studio audience - High Hopes, the live Just Up Your Street final, Children in Need when they're in studio etc. etc. Around 1988/89 a complete series of "Terry and June" was recorded there due to shortage of available studio space at TVC.

Ah, cheers for that.

That's amazing. I know the 2nd series of Rutland Weekend Television came from Bristol, but that's floored me.

Either way, sounds like C1 is good and busy. Oddly, it seems that Frank Hovis' Pub Quiz came from Culverhouse Cross when it was studio-based.

Yes I think Pub Quiz was recorded at Culverhouse Cross, as were all series of Satellite City. There was also a comedy sketch show (can't now remember its one-word title) which was recorded at Enfys TV Facilities in the East Moors area of Cardiff. The tendency now is to use C1 as much as possible, whether it's an in-house production or an indie commission. Up until around 2000, even Question Time - when in Cardiff - more often than not came from Culverhouse Cross, but over the last few years it's always been at Llandaff.

There have been times when there actually isn't enough studio space due to S4C commitments. There is a small news set available in C1 in the event of a weekend Newyddion bulletin clashing with Wales Today in the Pres Studio, although I think I can only remember it being used once, as C2 normally do a quick turnaround after Wales on Saturday and also handle Wales Today, leaving the Pres Studio available for Newyddion in the event of such a clash.

On the night of the last General Election, everything was pushed into service, with C1 housing the S4C programme. C2 has the permenant news set for Wales Today, Newyddion and Ffeil, and was busy with those transmissions. BBC ONE Wales had its own programme, which came from Studio 1 (the radio Concert Hall which is used now and again as a four-waller for television work) and the network BBC ONE programme went on to BBC TWO Wales and was passed through the Pres Studio gallery to add the Wales graphics during the regional opt points!

This is a shock. Was just talking about Culverhouse Cross yesterday, and how HTV was likely to move to a smaller operation.

I wonder if this'll see an increase in networked programmes produced there. It's a massive investment.

There was just a short piece on ITV Wales News about the purchase. Business correspondent Nick Partridge commented that there were "of course, no rules saying all programmes have to be made in London or Manchester", and that the amount of programming produced for other channels could be increased.

Thats unusual, were so used to ITV wanting to sell small studios (and the big Carlton Studios)

The main difference with Culverhouse Cross is that, unlike the other studios, it's home to lots of Welsh independent media companies. They all rent space and facilities. I'd imagine it's quite profitable.

Cheers for that bit of info Steve. Another major trivia question to flaw a couple of supposed anoraks I know with!
But, I thought BBC Elstree was used for sit-coms if TVC was full up? I remember reading a couple series of Allo Allo were recorded up there towards the end of it's run.

What is Elstree used for these days apart from EE & Holby?
