Probably been seen already but here’s the start of the ITN/TVAM joint 1983 election coverage

Interesting because for that morning only, the ITV companies retained having the network signal through their studios (in order to provide regional news opts as mentioned.)

I was living in TSW Land at the time. There was a part networked movie that was shown between 4am and 6am. The smaller ITV companies opted not to show it. TSW had two hours worth of their station continuity clock, and silence (or maybe tone)

I would assume or presume that there was a special agreement with the unions to keep the local stations open.

On an unrelated note, amazed to see web hosting on the Demon domain still exists - I thought Vodafone had axed Demon?

It's living on borrowed time apparently and may not see out this month:

I think election night for all broadcasters, led to special union arrangements ?

I don't think TV-am teamed up with ITN or had regional opts in 1987 or 1992. I guess it helped in 1983 when they were badly struggling to have that help in covering it, though.

I wonder if Sky News helped out in 1992 after they took over the contract for TV-AM News?

Yes, I suspect in 1983 Greg Dyke would have thought it madness not to team up with ITN and the rest of ITV, by the time 1987 arrived he'd long gone. I seem to recall ITN's David Nicholas had approached Dyke some weeks earlier with the idea ?

They'd have done more than help out, they were TVam News so they'd have been providing the coverage.

An ITN /TVam co-production made sense in 1983 as the station was only a few months old

Isn't that how Kay Burley sort of ended up working for Sky ?

They didn't "take it over", it was effectively outsourced to them for the rest of the life of the company (since they knew they were going off air New Year's Eve 1992), and the bulk of the rest of the year was pretty much done on the cheap, which included closing the news desk.
I dare say by the end of 1992 TV-am was so profitable a company it was ridiculous, a far cry from the cash strapped days of 1984. I wonder if they sold the studios to MTV for more than it cost them to fit it out in the first place?

Kay Burley was a reporter on TVam as early as 1986, think she left for Sky for a programme and then joined Sky News from there.

In fact, from here: "1988: Joins Sky television, launching Sky One in February 1989 with her own documentary, The Satellite Revolution."

I thought Burley had been headhunted by Andrew Neil to join Sky?

Ah yes, she's been at Sky since day 1, before any Sky /TVam collaboration then

There were a few TVam News reporters who ended up staying at Sky because of the outsourcing - Liza Aziz and Geoff Meade are two that spring to mind
