The fact is people won't know they like something new and different until they're given something different. Emmerdale has 7 million watching but there are 58 million people in this country and they aren't watching. Perhaps putting different shows on each night would get these people in and actually deliver a bigger audience that don't want soaps all the time.

Just remind me again, what programme it was that last pulled in 58m viewers ?

I haven't got a clue, do you know?

There are millions of people out there that would watch more tv if the right show came along. Strictly Come Dancing appealed to an older audience that didn't normally watch Saturday night TV in large numbers. Instead of going for the same audience as The X Factor it appealed to a completely different set of viewers and increased total viewership during that time period. There are millions of people that don't want soaps or reality programmes all the time, make the right show to hook these people in and your ratings go up.

Well for starters 58m people do not have a television set, and of those that do, they're not all watching at 7pm of an evening.

Of those that are watching Emmerdale usually pulls in around 6-7m viewers, about a 30-40% share of those watching the television. Out of the 5 terrestrial channels and the hundreds of multi-channels to pull in that level of share of audience isn't bad by todays standards.

The audience is too dispersed nowadays to command anything much more than that, it's only the likes of big national events that would command huge audience shares ie. 19.9m viewers for the most watched England game in the World Cup, 70% share.

In the 70's Monday to Friday at 7 on ITV was something different each night, I'd love to see that variety again.

I couldnt agree more. The 7pm slot used to have a variety of different programmes from quiz shows to factual programmes. Showing Emmerdale every weeknight and Sundays as well is just lazy scheduling.

This is a quote from the Broadcast now website and it sums up perfectly what is needed at ITV.

"ITV needs someone who has got an understanding of television, understanding of programmes and understanding of audiences." Lesley Duncan, investment director at Standard Life Investments, on the requirements needed for ITV's next chief executive

Some very good points being raised here. Cheers Lets hope ITV take some notice of their viewers for once and make some much needed changes. Well, I can dream...

The way it is now is hardly encouraging for people who would like to get into television in front of the camera or behind the scenes is it? Rolling Eyes I mean there is more to TV then soaps like Coronation Street and Emmerdale isn't there or was that just in the past? Scratch Head

Exactly, I'm surprised ITV hasn't figured that out yet. Rolling Eyes

The soaps are the not the weak point in the schedule. Emmerdale & Corrie give ITV1 a headstart into primetime every night, it's what follows them and what proceeds them that is the problem.

I half agree, I think the over use of soaps is a bad thing. The plots are too thin sometimes (and I included EastEnders too). We really don't need Corrie on twice on a Monday evening. It's very lazy scheduling.

ITV are just getting a taste of the usual media hype conveniently before yet another take over bid emerges. Its another of those stories that goes around and comes around. The next one pencilled in will be GCSE's & 'A' levels have been dumbed down and are not what they used to be.
