When will ITV announce a launch date for their new channel? Will it be in HD or SD?

Is that the strategy then, create Encore for all their best shows and Be for the opposite? Smile

Perhaps it's just to create a pay-tv version of ITV3 (Encore) and ITV2 (Be), and then close the other channels.

It seems obvious what Encore means, in terms of drama: but what is Be supposed to mean?
ITV Be isn't pay

Which makes me wonder why they're launching it? If Be was pay as well, I would have understood it as: ITV have seen that they can get a nice amount of money by keeping 2/3/4 HD on pay TV, and so they've realised that they can supplement this by launching pay versions of their most valuable digital offerings, 2 and 3, as Be and Encore respectively, with some shows moving from ITV2 to Be to entice people to subscribe to pay TV.

But then it turns out that Be isn't going to be pay only. ITV2 already has the most valuable channel number on the Freeview EPG after the main five, so surely moving shows to this new channel would be a bad thing. Or have I completely misunderstood ITV's strategy?

I think they just don't have enough ad slots on ITV2 to keep up with demand, ITV Be is a way to tap in to that extra cash from advertisers. Essentially another ITV2, just slightly more niche.

Moving the popular shows gives Be an audience from day 1.

Fairly safe to assume it'll launch in both SD and HD with an SD +1, like ITV Encore.

Thanks, that's what this Guardian article seems to say too (don't know how I missed it back in February!)

Quote:
The broadcaster has spotted an opportunity to capitalise on the success of ITV2, the UK's most popular channel after the five main terrestrial networks with a 2.5% share of total viewing in January (including ITV2+1), by launching female-focused spin-off channel ITVBe.

ITV2 has not got enough advertising airtime to meet demand, according to Locke, creating a "big opportunity" for ITV. "It is the 'go to' channel. Clients want to spend more and can't."

Locke says that ITVBe will give ITV the chance to revisit popular shows that viewers miss on first airing, as well as target female audiences.

"We've said that shows like Lorraine, This Morning and Loose Women are popular but many potential viewers miss them as they are on in daytime," says Locke. "However, they could run [on ITVBe] again in the evening."

Nice and simple graphics showing the flexibility in the itv logo once again.

Is this a similar animation to what was tested on itv2?
