ITV is a "fairly dysfunctional organisation" and "there is a lot that needs fixing", its boss has warned.

Adam Crozier, the broadcaster's chief executive, admitted that ITV had failed to keep up with the changes in the "media landscape".

He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme ITV needed to move more into pay-per-view broadcasting and the internet.

But he said he "can't envisage a situation" where viewers would have to pay to watch its main ITV1 channel.

Mr Crozier, who took up the top job at ITV in April after leaving Royal Mail, said he had spent his first months at the company trying to make sure he had "a very clear view" of the issues that the broadcaster faced.

"ITV has great programmes and a great brand, the key is rebalancing the business to be much less reliant upon free-to-air advertising," he said.

"What we need to do is turn the organisation around to get it fit for purpose and start competing in these new markets [of pay-per-view and online]."

ITV has already started efforts to move into pay-per-view, announcing earlier this month that it will launch three new high definition channels via Sky in the autumn - ITV2 HD, ITV3 HD and ITV4 HD.

At present its single high definition channel, ITV1 HD, is available for free via Freesat, Freeview, Sky and Virgin.

ITV also reported earlier this month that it had returned to profit, announcing a pre-tax profit of £97m for the first half of the year thanks to higher advertising revenues. In the same period last year it had reported a loss of £105m.

They need some decent web developers if they want to have a real net-TV presence.

I attempted to watch "3 @ Three" online the other day. I was greeted by 3 video ads, a trailer for the programme, another ad (marked as "1 of 1"), immediately followed by two more, (marked as "1 of 2" and "2 of 2"), then the same trailer again. When it started playing more ads I clicked close and gave up.

Absolutely pathetic. Its been months since I tried to watch anything on their crappy online player - the last time being when Harry Hill was on, which invariably wouldn't start; and I won't try again, unless its drastically overhauled.

Have you tried the STV version? It's vastly superior.

Yes indeed, its very good indeed.

Some shows aren't on both - although this example probably was.

Regarding the ITV Player woes with excessive adverts . . .

I just attempted to watch a random edition of the aformentioned "3@Three" program on ITV Player, and I got no adverts at all. What I did get was the loading % circle animation for a few secs, the "ITV Player brings you ITV1 ident, the loading animation again for another few secs, then the program started.

When it came to the adbreak, there were no adverts shown , it went straight to the next part of the program.
Although I chose not to watch the entire show due to that heavy set neanderthal gobsh*te in the middle!

I think the Adblock Plus extension I've got installed on SeaMonkey may have something to do with it.

Stuart, I think you got a quote mixed up there ... the "heavy set neanderthal gobsh*te" one!

As for blocking the video adverts on ITV Player, if they're being fed through any known advertising servers, such as
the many variants of doubleclick.net, Adblock Plus blocks them all, as well as the usual annoying web ad banners.

Adblock Plus also acts as a good "on the fly" blocker of other unwanted content as well.

I see, thanks.

In any event, I don't mind a couple of 30 second ads, and I recognise that they [all broadcasters] need the cash.

But I'll watch them via STV's Player (where I can) and give them the revenue instead. It's A much smoother experience.
