I agree with chrisb, some forum members are living in some sort of romanticised past where regional programming is the be and end all. The fact is, we're living in a capitalist society, and ITV is a business as well as a TV network.

They needed to move forward, and if you actualy read the accounts of some of employees at the ITV stations, you'll find it wasn't always easy working for more than one voice.

Threads like this only seem to be started to have a go at ITV.

Erm, I think you ought to read my post again. At what point did I even hint towards regional programming, or a multi-company ITV? Rolling Eyes

I'm actually in favour of a single ITV. I just want to keep it as a British owned company.

Ditto, why should ITV go into foreign hands, I don't want it to, it should stay British, really they should just leave it at ITVplc, I'd rather it be that ITVplc would buy up other companies and channels, as why would we need to sell a very big company for a very big country to another broadcaster? I wouldn't be arsed if Michael Green bought it or whatever, as we don't want to see American trash and ideas onto British TV. It would be awful if Viacom bought ITV, it just wouldn't work, plus the amount of trash which Viacom show anyway wouldn't fit into ITV. Plus the amount of poor reality TV programming on CBS is a bit OTT. I wouldn't like it if Hallmark bought it as they know little about TV except for made for TV movies. The only American Broadcaster I wouldn't mind seeing controlling ITV is NBC/ General Electric as NBC does have high quality output compared to other networks. Though I can't complain too much at the moment of the way that ITV is ran. Though I would believe for now that SMG and UTV wan't bugger all to do with Carlton and Granada, which might have a better long term consequence.

But simply, keep ITV British!

Because the Tory Bliar government specifically wrote a clause into the Communications Act, that only could a European company purchase ITV (as is required under the free market regulations of the European Union) but also that non-European companies could buy ITV in addition .

So why did the Tory Bliar administration make an allowance for foreign non-European ownership, unless they were pressured to do so, from ITV its-self, or another large media organisation which has undue influence over Tory Bliar, and which he needs to ensure another smooth electoral victory.

Remember, it is your government at work.

Again, as the ITC has shown, whatever clauses are written into the communications act can be changed. The ITC was formed with clauses on requiring much more regional output, on the number of stations that could be jointly owned (at first one company could only own 2 stations), and that they had to be owned within the UK. 10 years on, where is all of that now?
