My old man likes to watch alot of ITV 3 due to it's high content of old programmes however I have noticed there is quite a few old BBC programmes on ITV 3 including; The Two Ronnies, Pie In The Sky, Lovejoy, Waking The Dead & Goodnight Sweetheart to name a few.
Am I the only one who finds this odd seeing all of these BBC programmes on an ITV channel, especially when not that long ago neither channel would allow their stars to appear on each others channels (Eastenders Cast on LWT's An Audience With... programmes & Chris Tarrant on Only Fools & Horses for a special edition of WWTBAM).
Surely the BBC would benefit from showing these on one of their own digital channels instead.
What has changed since that has A) allowed BBC to (i presume) sell their programmes to their main rival & B) for ITV to show alot of their rivals back catalogue when they already have their own huge catalogue from Thames, Central & Granada?
Any info greatly appreciated & views would be of interest also
perhaps they ought to vary the schedule away from back to back drama. quiz shows such as blockbusters and classic corrie would give the channel far wider appeal
I don't see any reason why ITV3 shouldn't show BBC programmes, as no-one else wants to show them, the BBC usually give first rights to BBC Worldwide, ie UKTV, UKTV have shown most if not all of these programmes and has chose not to show them and focus on other programmes instead. It makes ITV3 different and stands out a bit more compared to it's sister channels IMO. If you care to take a look at recent BARB ratings
The Two Ronnies
has performed very well on ITV3.
Goodnight Sweetheart
was slightly different as it was actually produced by Alomo (now FremantleMedia) rather than the BBC, and ITV3 shows a fair bit of programmes from FremantleMedia such as
Rumpole Of The Bailey, Never The Twain, No Job For A Lady
the list could go on.
Though you could say the same for BBC programmes being shown on Challenge TV and Paramount, but again they make nice additions to the appropriate channels and add something different.
Though the only permanent case (ie other than Theme Nights) is ABC's
The Avengers
which is still being shown on BBC Four on a regular basis.
To all intents and purposes, ITV3 seems to be almost exactly the same as UK Gold was in it's early years, when it's
programming was pretty much all taken from the archives of the BBC and Thames Television. The only things
that seems to be different between UK Gold then and ITV3 now, is the corporate branding and ownership.
Good grief, I had forgotten about that Michael Elphick show!!!!! Love to see it again. Wasn't it last repeated on the ITV(On)Digital/cable channel Carlton Select which also showcased many alomo programmes as well?
First filmed in Birmingham and then moved to NOttingham - light hearted, dramatic and good fun to watch. A show like this will never be made again by ITV - it would cost far too much to make.
I think it's great that ITV3 is showing shows from both channels. I am sick to death with UKTV Gold and its heavy repeats of Only Fools, Porridge, Open All House, Ab Fab and the like.
