Indeed, under the philosophy that the consistent format allowed information to be displayed clearly, saved time and money and the brand personality could be better communicated by a symbol/theme unique to the channel brand, not the logo design or typesetting.
In the case of the BBC in the last decade, that has swung completely the other way with custom fonts, layouts and the brand logo itself now frequently centre stage (BBC Sounds, "if it's got a name, it's got a logo", etc).
I think you're probably right in that nobody would expect it from the BBC now however in years gone by (admittedly over 20 now) we did have exactly that on the BBC - and it even extended to the UKTV channels at the time, too.

If you have to explain the ident by saying "oh, well, here it is shaped entirely differently, and photographed at a completely different angle so you can see what it's actually meant to be", then it's a poor ident.

C4 didn't get that memo either.

Completely different. The C4 logo is pretty much the same since the channel launched, everyone knows the logo and the fact its made up from separate blocks and each block is quite unique in shape.
The ITV logo has only been in use since 2013, and has never been seen broken up into random squiggly shapes before. If you showed a room full of people a few of the C4 blocks some would recognise them, if you showed the same room those random squiggles of the 3D ITV logo, not one person would know what they were from.

It's art. There's going to be a lot of different interpretations over the next year - probably best to keep your minds as open as possible.
Also consider the idents will be appearing alongside all the other more pedestrian presentation, along with a voiceover announcing the channel name.
