we've discussed the effect the 1979 ITV strike had on Corry and it's storylines but wondered how it affected Emmerdale

It finished for it's usual summer break in July 1979, but didn't return until January 1980. Don't know about the storylines though.

Well it would have still been on in the afternoon as a Doctors style mini-soap back then.

Emmerdale Farm was shown on a Monday and Tuesday at 1.30pm I believe, although some regions had moved it to an evening slot by the early 1980s, it wasn't fully networked until 1988 I think.

thanks for the link there, looks like they covered the strike by having annie think about the last five months

during the itv strike did Granada stop making corry for two months in order to catch themeselves up

From what I have read, and from memory, the continuity was all over the place. Brian and Gail were due to be married whilst the strike was on, so didn't actually marry until November, and the different weather aspects were obvious apparantly, I have the episodes on VHS from their repeats, so I may have to watch some time to see if it is true.

ISTR that the characters of Len and Bet introduced the first episode back on the Wednesday, explaining the storyline before the strike. I think some regions never saw the last episode in August.

I would expect Crossroads just to carry on as if nothing had happened, they were (in)famous for it with or without strikes!

Corrie was off air between August and November I believe. Gail and R Brian were due to get married in the summer but the wedding didnt take place until November 1979.

thanks, I was nine-years-old so have rather fuzzy memories of Len and Bet telling us what had been happening

I would guess they would stop making the programme either during the strike or after it as they would have had so many unbroadcasted episodes in the can

Have a look at this Steve - episode guide from Granada Plus repeat run.

http://www.corrie.net/updates/classic/1979.html

According to that the last ep was shown on 8th August 1979 and the next episode 24th October 1979 (it then has the date in green of when the ep was meant to be broadcast until they got back on track I assume. It also says the 8th Aug ep wasn't shown on HTV or Thames!

All this went on 2 years before I was born but ive seen the eps on Granada Plus.

Erm ... just so you understand how a strike works.

No ITV company was making anything for 12 weeks. No staff came in to work, nobody (other than managers) was in any building (except Channel). It wasn't simply a case of "stopping production to catch up". The technicians were all out in the street. Nothing at all was made.
