Do they?
"World in Action" on a Monday night at 8.30.
Documentaries by John Pilger at 9.00, or other one-offs such as "L.S. Lowrey - A Private View".
"Jewel in the Crown".
"Survival" shown at peak time.
Properly funded regional productions, made in studios - and not always serious (eg Gloria Hunniford's "Sunday Sunday".; "The Six O'Clock Show".
"21-Up".
"World at War"
"The Naked Civil Servant"
Genuinely funny sit-coms - for example "Rising Damp"
Want me to go on?

It's a complete myth to believe that it was some talented, high-brow broadcaster twenty or thirty years ago.
The schedules of 20 years ago, easily found on the net, shows it to be full of the same formulaic UK dramas it shows now.

Maybe so, but these shows are few and far between. I agree wholeheartedly with Johnnyboy that ITV is indeed pleb TV, with the vast bulk of the schedules dominated by cheesy game shows, same-topics-every-week chat shows, etc.... etc......
I can ALWAYS find better on the BBC or on Sky Digital channels. And yes, I'm a BBC snob. When Calendar came to film my choral society in practice for a production at Boston Stump I walked out and went home, refusing to appear on 'that bloomin' show'.
It's my firm belief the BBC offers wider, more intelligent and a much more superior quality programming than 'common' ITV.....

I really don't know what to say. I don't think anyone who even works at the BBC is that anti-ITV.

Simple and logical really - I wasn't prepared to compromise my broadcasting loyalties by appearing on 'the other lot's channel'

John Pilger gets shown once every other year.
World In Action was ditched for Trevor McDonald's tonight.
Need I go on?
The ITV schedule has always been populist. It hasn't produced a decent documentary (JP aside) or comedy for years, and its dramas have always been formulaic.
As much as I hate to say it, the defenders of ITV here must be plebs.

May I be one of the 12 million odd plebs who watches Coronation Street, one of the 4 million plebs who watches ITV Regional News at 6pm?
This country must be full of millions and millions of people who are Council House TV then!
I frankly cannot stand BBC National News or News 24 either, but you don't see me mentioning my hatred.
Try watching something on ITV, it doesn't have to Calendar!
