Totally agree, possibly the best logo around in those days.

This logo is great, but in my opinion it was getting quite dated. I think the current ITV logo (and the corporate one) are very suitable and functional. The old ITV logo wouldn't be very nice to have in the corner of ITV2/3/4/etc as it's a bit bigger and slightly more complex.

The current set of logos are quite good IMO, but would be better if ITV used them properly - why doesn't ITV Productions and ITV DVD get a bar on the end? I also think the +1 logos would look better if the +1 was inside the bar, rather than stuck on the end.

The problem with ITV using a pretty standard logo is the lack of flexibility - from this thread (I'm not old enough to remember it onscreen) the IT* logo seemed to be too infexible to work well for all the regions. The block logo's weakness was the limited colour scheme - OK for 2 channels, but not for much more. With the current logo, there's only so many bright colours you can use, as the Beeb found out with its boxes.

True, but they could have (although it would never happen) evolved the ident a-la HTV's 1993 logo. Using ITV 1989 colours:

Of course, some regional logos were designed with ITV in mind Smile

I was really surprised when the ITV Schools interval sequence wasn't updated with the new ITV logo in 1989, but knowing what I do about the technology used to create the original sequence I realise what a pain that would have been. Perhaps someone at the ITV Association decided that by holding on to the old logo, ITV Schools could become a brand identity in its own right - who knows?

Of course, what ultimately killed the 1989 look was the franchise changes of 1993. Carlton, Meridian and Westcountry grudgingly placed "...production for ITV" prodcaps at the end of network commissions, but these were done in-house and did not follow the font schemes laid down by English Markell Pockett. All three were too busy establishing their new on-air brands, which it has to be said they did very successfully.

I don't think that's technically possible the way they do it at the moment. From what I can make out, the +1 bit of the DOG is added separately onto the hour-old recording of the channel.

I noticed the other morning during the kids' programmes on ITV2+1, the +1 bit was there looking lonely on its own, without the ITV2 DOG.

I know I'm going to get flamed to death for saying this, but Carlton had an extremely strong logo, especially the 1999 version.

Carlton's programming was utter trash, but at least they had some branding sense though Martin Lambie-Nairn - the Cartlonisation should have happened a lot earlier.

I kinda wish they got to the much eviler Granada before Granada got to them - At least the brand would exist beyond the Screen Advertising Group.

I love the Carlton pres package, and these days if you go into a cinema the Carlton logo lives on in the form of the Screen Advertising ident. Basically that consists of a branding iron in the familiar star shape being thrust towards the camera.

IMO Carlton's pres was the best part of the channel. Carlton was a bit like Channel 4 today - brilliant pres, but very few decent programmes.

Hang on... I've had an idea...

I actually prefer the ITV blocks logo, so much you can do with that idea. In the end they just used the same animation over three different backgrounds, how boring. But since the BBC are using blocks I think ITV deserves it's own identity which uses a shape not usually seen in the UK - circle.

BBC1's using circles.

But the BBC official logo is three square boxes. BBC 1 logo is just the boxes and an oversized lowercase one. I know the current logo is designed to be 'classy' but they do not use it to it's full potential (for example on the news titles it it just stuck on top of it instead of animating to form the logo).
