Totally agree, possibly the best logo around in those days.

I know I'm going to get flamed to death for saying this, but Carlton had an extremely strong logo, especially the 1999 version.

Carlton's programming was utter trash, but at least they had some branding sense though Martin Lambie-Nairn - the Cartlonisation should have happened a lot earlier.

I kinda wish they got to the much eviler Granada before Granada got to them - At least the brand would exist beyond the Screen Advertising Group.

I totally agree with you. Carlton was damn proud of its identity, even though it had a habit of wiping out others, and it's logo was extremely original and easily identifiable. Its 1999 ident set were really creative and pleasing to watch and could get away with being on TV today. Saying that, its 1996 set were also quite witty and clever, again another Lambie-Nairn creation.
In the end, yes Granada was much worse by means of closing regional studios / regional continuity, which Carlton kept to all the way until 2002, despite axing the name. Central was very much alive in 2002 as it was 10 years previously.

If you think back to the logos the regional companies had and then look at the present ITV1 logo, doesn't the ITV1 logo seem cr@p.

I do like the ITV1 logo (now in black) but I really don't think the yellow is right. It looks so bad on the idents.

Very true. The problem with subsequent ITV logos is the choice of lower case lettering, which has conveyed the message "dumbed down".

As good as the 1989 identity was, it was clearly very London-centric and at a time when ITV was still fiercely regional, it was inevitable some regions would reject it. The new look was perfect for Thames, but completely out of step with the cosy world of TSW.

True as can be seen from the image below (which evolved from the original 1989 incarnation) it worked for Thames but some regions came of terrible for these idents

Edit: Image was off of the back of a Thames Video for Men Behaving Badly hence why the logo just says "Thames" as opposed to "Thames Television"

And look what Tyne Tees viewers had to put up with:

tyne tees logo page

If the Tyne Tees tag wasn't there would anyone have known what this was supposed to represent?

Oddly Tyne Tees were one of the longest users of this ident despite its poor end logo.

It was a good logo but it wan't versatile enough for some regions to use, hence its inevitable demise on screen.

It was the left hand side of the TTTV logo from the 1988 "rivers" ident. Tyne Tees came off better out of it IMO. Grampian perhaps came out second best from these idents (hence the long usage).

I would say Scottish & TVS Television (as they oddly became) came out worst of those lot, even TSW & Anglia you could tell what was what even though neither of them or TVS Television used theirs.

I don't like the logo. I liked the square boxes logos. I would have prefered a logo like this:

It's dull, but not that dull.

That looks awful! Why would you prefer that?

I actually prefer the ITV blocks logo, so much you can do with that idea. In the end they just used the same animation over three different backgrounds, how boring. But since the BBC are using blocks I think ITV deserves it's own identity which uses a shape not usually seen in the UK - circle.

I agree - the blocks worked well as the 4 squares that formed them were actually a logo, not just a bit of text on a coloured background!

I personally don't like it, but it's better than what there is now.
