Well the Isle of Man has had Manx Radio since the 1960's. It is licensed by the Manx parliament and is totally independent of the BBC, IBA/Radio Autority/Ofcom. Presumably this is why no other Isle of Man station has been licensed/launched - the competition is very strong and the would effect the national broadcast, Manx

Does the Isle of Man have it's own Transmitter?

Douglas [MB21]

I think there are also sites Laxey, Port St Mary and Beary Park, but the coverage areas are very small.

Yes, they are licensed by the Isle of Man Government, not Ofcom/Radio Authority (and of course MusicMann is not a local station)

Googling around it seems there will be a third station on the Isle of Man: 3FM

I heard that Border served the whole island, but that NE&C/NW share it. It is crazy that BBC NE&C come anywhere near it - a heavily biased Newcastle service with a tiny bureaux in Teeside is hardly fit to go as far as the Pennines, never main an Island off the other side of the country.

From the Douglas transmitter the BBC North East Service is broadcast most of the time execpt when local news or other programming is shown when the signal automatically switches to show BBC1 North West as this BBC news region covers BBC News. Therefore most of day BBC NE Idents and Ceefax service is broadcast except for when local programmes are shown when the Ceefax and programming switches to BBC NW.

I think the Douglas transmitter also only broadcasts the ITV1 Border as this region seems to cover Isle of Man news and weather while the Granada region does not.

Why on earth to they get the NE service? Why not just broadcast NW all the time?

Caldbeck (which supplies the IoM transmitters with their BBC feed) carries BBC North East & Cumbria. It did carry the BBC North West region for a while (1986-1991), but this proved unpopular and resulted in one of its relays at Haltwhistle having its BBC feed changed over from Caldbeck to Pontop Pike so that viewers there could continue to see Look North. The news feed for the IoM transmitters (and the BBC service for the South Lakes relays) comes from Winter Hill.

This puts the other broadcaster, Border TV in a rather uncomfortable situation - not only is it the Isle of Man's ITV service, it also has to cover part of a devolved Scotland as well as Cumbria and the Lakes. Its tendency to lean towards Cumbria and the IoM tends not to go down well in South Scotland - but then, you could argue that viewers on the Island could say the same thing about Border providing coverage of the Scottish Parliament. Its region is a relic of the 1960s and to be honest is long overdue an overhaul.

I would have to disagree - Border are not biased towards Cumbria, in fact it is probably the IoM who lose out. S. Scotland is well - provided for, Lookaround often leads on a Scottish story on both Border England and Border Scotland. The main happenings at Holyrood are always broadcast on Lookaround, albeit sometimes only on Border Scotland, but the 5-minute opt for Scottish stories on Lookaround is very good. A similar service needs to be introduced for IoM and Cumbria. But it is the most diverse ITV region, and it would be a shame if it had to be overhauled.

Depends on what's termed South Scotland - certainly its coverage of the Dumfries area is very good, coverage of the eastern Scottish Borders a little less so. With a little effort on the part of ITV plc, this region should be used to its advantage.

This Isle of Man Government paper indicates the latest thinking on Radio - and TV in the Island. It appears that the proposed MANX TV channel is somewhat stillborn though.
