Is it really 'THAT' wrong to record from TV (and keep it)

Just tell me what you think of me morally (January 2007)

Regardless of the morality and legality of it, do you find you actually watch them?

I know I've taped things in the past, most of which after watching once or twice end up stuck in a drawer and thrown out or taped over a couple of years later.

P.S. And the irony of it all, the TV channels are now begging viewers for footage they recorded over the years for shows like the Swap Shop and Tiswas specials!

Just to add the fact that I record them both on DVD-RW discs each night. Then when I've when got them all I’ll put them into the correct running order, trim out the commercial breaks and idents from the start/end, and re-burn them all onto to 'permanent storage DVD-R disks for keeps.

That’s where I will be crossing the line I feel.

don't be silly. there are many more evils and moral injustices going on in the world than a few people keeping recordings of tv programmes, films or what have you.

you can look at it many ways, but in the end, no matter what anybody says, you are doing no one single person any harm. on that basis, it is logically impossible to classify your behaviour as wrong.

Well I watch them as I record them both at the moment. Once Ive grabbed them all and finalised my homemade sets..... well if Nicktoons TV loop them over again after that I'll likely watch them all again. (I watched Goodnight Sweetheart all the way though twice when ITV3 had it on)

The recordings are more for when Nicktoons stops airing them both altogther (Nicktoons TV USA has stopped). So its a case of not at the moment but at some point. Yes I almost certainly will watch them I know because I have watched The Mary Whitehouse Experience & This Morning With Richard Not Judy though twice since getting *cough bootlegs of them.

Logging off now got to get ready for tonights 2 recordings Very Happy

As long as your not flogging them at a Sunday car book sale in your local sainsburys car park I don't think you're harming anybody.

when you consider what you record on an average video cassette of 3 or four hours duration (6 to 8 hours on long play) you end up with things stuck on the end of the tapes for years.

I cleared out some really old cassettes some years back and found the whole Coronation Street 30th anniversary programme from 1990, an episode of spitting image from 1989 where the Princess of Wales sings 'reach out and touch' at the end (doubt they'll be repeating that one). and the news of the winsor castle fire from 1992. The furthest they went back was a programme about majegori from 1985 when my parents first brought a video recorder.

between 1983 and 1996 i recorded tv themes onto tape cassettes after recording them off the telly. If I'd have kept them I could have flogged them to TV ark Sad

The thing about both these shows is even before when the family had Sky (sky+ even) I was aware they were both being aired each night then, but with the family in the way. Well just couldn't watch them, and if I'd sky+'ed them would of had to watched them back in the living room and questions etc would of been asked.

Great that I can now go up stairs shut the door lay on my bed and watch/record them in peace. I have such a 'crossed' taste of Kids shows and high brow stuff. Eg, Thursdays I'll watch / do these then change over to BBC2 for Mock The Week then go over the BBC1 for question time ..... How's that for a mixture people!!!

- Also tonight after this real monsters is over I'm going over to More 4 for Trail of Tony Blair

Question I ask of you is morally do you all think its wrong for me to do it? I mean I have looked and there are no DVD's of either of them, and the set will just be for me to watch from I won't try and sell it to others for a profit, but that still is legal according to the law.

So what's your view of all this???

You will burn in hell, young man.

You have committed a grave offence under section 518 of the Children's Cartoons (Prevention of Viewing by Over-Age Citizens) Act 1901.

If I was in charge you'd be horsewhipped.

Take all your discs to your nearest police station and place them on the counter.

You know how they sometimes have knife amnesties? Ask to see the duty sergeant and tell him/her that you would like to hand over some illegal material.

You will feel much better if you do that, and you stand some chance of redemption.

Recite 12 News 24 countdowns and 6 Sky News voiceovers as penance.

I have been waiting for someone to comment on what the programmes themselves actually are.

I understand the adult innuendo’s in Rocko that I never got the 1st time around. I wonder also why these 2 shows are shown in the 'later at night' slot anyway?

Reburning them without ads and such is the same as me skipping through the ads on the recordings on my Sky+ box. If it was so morally wrong, and the broadcasters didn't want us to do it, I'm sure that the Sky+ software would have been programmed by now to stop it, but it hasn't, which suggests there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.

As said, recording stuff and selling it on may be a different matter, as well as recording copy protected material such as Pay Per View channels. But for simply recording cartoons for your own viewing pleasure later, nothing wrong with it at all IMHO.

Shouldn't that be "grammar-inept" or "grammatically inept"?
