Only part of that post I agree with is that the Horizon NHS episode is irrelevant. You may not like it but the rest of the schedule serves a purpose and compliments RTE One nicely.

I can't even agree with that. It's not so much a documentary looking at the NHS, it's about a cyber attack on a public service, and that's pretty relevant wherever you're from.

Imported programmes have always been at the heart of RTE2. It was set up specifically to broadcast imports to try and take on UTV and BBC One NI.

The channel needs to be refocused, just like BBC Two needs a complete overhaul of its schedule. It seems both RTE and BBC second channels have lost their way, and do not know what they are for anymore. Just a dumping ground.

Tell me what great programmes RTE 2 have made in the past 12 months which were not imports.

Sports programmes count, right?

And as Whataday says, imports have always been at the heart of RTÉ2. It could be argued that, these days, there are a few too many of them and the really good ones are shown at the wrong times - but if there were no imports *at all*, the channel would be virtually dead. Wink

Now how does that Bruce Hornsby song go again...? Wink

You must admit, there should be more new content on the channel, instead of wall to wall US and Australian imports? It should be a home for new comedy, drama, and RTE 2 News should be restored.

hmmm as a viewer I would probably pick a US import over something RTE would produce to be honest. I've always had trouble getting into shows produced here - there's not the same edge to them as there is in an import and that's probably because they are on a smaller budget. If Virgin Media gain US imports that RTE2 drop that would be very bad news for RTE2 - it would be a very bad idea for them to lose any US imports to a competitor. There's no coming back from that.

As for news, you've got RTE News Now and most people in that age group tend to get the latest news online. If you put more money into news there's less money for something else.

BBC Two started with a clear remit that got eroded by BBC Three and Four. RTE Two's purpose was to carry imports to attract viewers that were being lost to UK broadcasters. The observation that it carries too many imports is hardly an argument for the channel losing its way.

The channel needs to be rethought in this era of multi channel and online. RTE 2 will not survive, and the already harsh budget cuts at RTE makes the channel's line up very weak indeed.

So RTE should invest money it doesn't have, to add more original programming to RTE2 and hand over popular imports to VMTV?

RTÉ Player was meant to have it's new look today. It's official Twitter account has been updated with the new logo. But there has been no sign of it's relaunch on desktop website or presumably on mobile today. It is currently delayed until further notice. I have been hearing some good things while reading about it on Twitter earlier this evening. It will finally have chromecast support on iOS & Android, HTML5 support will be included for the first time and a new look interface will be in place when it will be relaunched soon.

Here is the new logo to give a sneak peek. What do you think of it?

...I'm sure I'll get used to it in time. Like Virgin Media TV.

Silly way of attempting to incorporate a play symbol into the logo. Looks awful I think.

The Logo was the only part of the Old player that was reliable. If it turns out the only thing wrong with the new player is the look of the logo most people won't mind.
