Any reason why Saturday/Sunday AM was from the TV3 garden? The weather hasn't been 'that' great to completely go outside this weekend in the Dublin area.

Simon said on Sunday that a new set was being built.

I got reminded of this debate when I saw an ad for Coco Pops on E4 tonight. Who remembers Choco Krispies?

But I digress...

Taking things back to Irish television, RTE One is giving a huge amount of airtime to the Pope’s visit next weekend - with coverage on Saturday from 10am-1pm and 2:55-5:30pm and Sunday 9am-11:30am and 2pm-5:45pm. Hour long Six One both days.

It is a historic visit, which the national broadcaster would of course spend a lot of time on. Remember, RTE is still a bit of an ass kisser to the pope and catholic church. The still broadcast the angelus chimes on their national RTE1 television channel and RTE Radio 1 every day, along with the usual Sunday fawning of key masses, services etc, something which the BBC here and earlier ITV scrapped.

I see TV3 are totally ignoring the pope's visit, and from their schedules there is not one special news programme for the entire visit. Ireland's only independent station just thinks RTE is the best place for coverage, and all they have is their usual weekend news at 5.30, and probably token coverage during Saturday/Sunday AM show. So much for Virgin Media investing in news for their network?

They probably should be doing more although, playing devil's advocate, they could argue that Ireland is no longer a particularly religious nation and the wider audience would much rather watch a movie or reality TV show than sit through endless hours of 'experts' commenting positively on an old man in a funny hat waving for hours at people. That said, they should have probably opted for one big news special, and hourly top-of-the-hour 2-3 minute updates. It would have been a good opportunity to direct viewers to more coverage online.

TV3 commitment to news is half hearted. Yes, they do more news at breakfast time, where RTE just throw re-runs of UK/US sitcoms and repeats of Today Show. However when it comes to big events, TV3 fails totally. Their general election coverage was dreadful in 2016, their usual bulletins with a little hour or two extra coverage, and that was it. Their online news is even worse, no content, just the recently uploaded news bulletin, with no written content at all, it seems they are following the path of Channel 5 News here in the UK for online content.

We can only hope their new rebrand as VM One, Two and Three will change this? I doubt it.

TV3 couldn't care less about the Pope, If they did cover it they'd claim it was exclusively on TV3. There's a lot of coverage on BBC NI over the weekend, BBC 2 seems to have several hours covering the events on Saturday, BBC 1 has a Special on Sunday Night and Songs of Praise seems to be some sort of Pope special as well. UTV have a live special on Sunday between 6.15 and 7.30.

I still prefer TV3's news output compared to the dated snoozefest on RTÉ, However, like the BBC in the UK, the PSB continues to be the home of major events within the country.

TV3 could be so much better if they bothered their arse to do it, and invest a few extra million euros into it. However the upcoming rebrand as VM One etc, will not help. Everyone knows TV3 News, it has been a name used for 20 years, and now it is going into the bin and replaced with what? VM News?

Their online news is just appalling. At least RTE News online has proper written articles. TV3 have decided that the latest news bulletin uploaded is enough. Come on! I hope the relaunch next week will see their news online upgraded. If it isn't, then VM News or what ever name they will use will just be as terrible as TV3 News.

Is there any details of the new look, new style etc on their website?

The 6 O'Clock Show set looked rather compact today. There were no wide shots and what they did have was tight. Even the guest sofa appeared to be right next to the kitchen area of the set.

This might be a sign of the studio getting a new look, stage by stage for the relaunch of the network next week
