Irish TV legend passes away

So two issues for me here - and apologies if they've already been addressed:

1. As far as I understand it TV3 has taken over a long-term deal for ITV's programming in buying UTV Ireland. In which case they may as well show them, transferring any huge hits over to TV3 and using ITV shows that are less interesting to Ireland to fill out the schedule for their less important brands.
2. To retain the prominent Saorview position does TV3 have to commit to providing the same news service as UTV Ireland? If so, I'd be surprised if they didn't try to negotiate that down after a period of time. It's somewhat odd to have 3e with seemingly no news commitment, then a channel one further down trying to provide a full news service to a relatively small population.

Yes, TV3 should really show some of UTV Ireland's daytime schedule like Judge Rinder and stuff. I think they also should have a weekend news service and scrap Ireland Live as it's pointless to have two news services by the same company.

TV3 and the UTV News service will clearly be merged. As TV3 upped their news provision to compensate for the loss of content to UTV I suspect probably the 8pm bulletin will move to UTV Ireland, ticking that box. Clearly they won't run competing bulletins at 5.30pm and the 10pm bulletin will probably go.

Re the Saorview position, the reason 3e gets away with little or no news is that, after TV3 took it over, they handed back its own contract and entered into an arrangement with the BAI whereby 3e is effectively regarded as being provided as part of the TV3 contract. Quite what the legal basis for the BAI to do this was, I don't know, but nobody objected to it at the time.

Presumably, once the UTV deal is through, TV3 will seek to enter into a similar arrangement with the BAI for it. Having pulled it off once I imagine they'll get away with it a second time. Once that happens there'll be no more need for news on UTV Ireland.

It'll be sad if that happens, but then again UTV have reduced their 10 pm news to half an hour. IIRC they launched with a hour-long news which took a summer break just like Six One does and inculded a preview of the next day which I liked.

All this proves that 18 months is a lifetime in broadcast media. When UTV Ireland launched there were many who predicted their news service would resonate with the Irish population and that, coupled with Emmerdale and Corrie, would ultimately spell the end of TV3.

I never thought their new service would resonate with Ireland - RTE has that pretty sown-up - but I would have said there's only room for one commercial broadcaster in Ireland, and UTV would have had a very good chance of wiping out TV3 having grabbed major ITV shows. Fair play to TV3, they got their tactics spot on, scheduling repeats of ITV shows against the ones they'd lost the rights to, filling the schedule with decent new shows and digging in until UTV fell over.

Seems Ireland Live won an IFTA for best news programme for their Brexit special. I actually do think it's a better programme than TV3 News (which I'm not particularly a fan of), but obviously once the takeover goes through only one will survive and that will be TV3.

RTE's Prime Time appeared to have new titles tonight (in a similar style to before, but redone) though not sure if it was just for the Budget Special or whether they'll be using this version (obviously without the "budget special" in the logo) going forward.

While its inevitable that the 3 News brand will consume Ireland Live, I'm hoping TV3 will keep some news content on the old UTV (and change that bloody awful VR set!).

Splitting Emmerdale and Corrie wasn't something I'd considered, but it actually makes good sense and there is a precident. Before TV3 gained the rights for the first time, RTE1 ran Emmerdale in the late afternoon - 4.50 I believe, and in the early 1990's Corrie ran on Network 2.

Keeping Emmerdale on UTV and moving Corrie to TV3 would share the spoils. Maybe Corrie could get a late night repeat on UTV after the 10pm news (assuming it remains), providing an alternative to VIncent Browne?

I would (maybe unfairly) assume that the biggest shows would all good to TV3, with 3e and UTV Ireland existing to pick up the slack.

Having said that, Ireland seems less tied in with this idea than in the UK, where if for example there's a huge sporting occasion it must go on BBC1 (see many discussions in the past about Wimbledon and regional news).

So TG4 decided to blow up their weather presenter for Halloween. As you do. https://twitter.com/TG4TV/status/793176490234052609
