You can't scrub a turd... A new look isn't really going to help at this stage, and it's amazing to think they quickly want to change the look of UTV Ireland to appeal to viewers, yet the UTV NI look has remained unchanged for what seems like forever and looks like something a student knocked up for a school project.

The quicker the whole operation goes to ITV the better.

YOU TV? Right, innovation clearly isn't their strong point then. 'Lets just rehash some old campaign from 10 years ago'. The graphics look dull as dishwater. And I agree this isn't going to change their misfortunes.

IVe not seen any idents yet but a breakbumper has appeared during GMB, that is very similar to ITV's with a green on white UTV Ireland logo on the right hand side of the screen. The competition caption was also slightly different, there was no green U in the background.

Hmm....if the old looks brief was "do exactly the same as UTV, but make it green" then the new looks brief seems to be "do something similar to ITV, but make it Irish". No it's not exactly the same as ITV, but is very similar in a lot of respects - logo position on the idents, promos, and most especially the break bumper - as mentioned above it is very similar to ITVs! It does look more modern - and incidently makes UTV Ireland look very different to UTV NI, whose presentation hasn't changed.

TV3 took what was apparently a last minute decision to keep the rugby on TV3 tonight, effectively swapping TV3 and 3e's prime time schedules tonight. Good news for those wanting to watch the rugby in HD, bad news for anyone was trying to record anything tonight (the Sky EPG still hasn't been updated at time of writing).

Also TV3 and 3e have moved the position of their DOGs further towards the top of the screen and made them much smaller, meaning they work a lot better with the RWC DOG.

It was probably the right move if it had been done correctly. While the Rugby figures up to now have been disappointing even matches like this will get 3 and 4 times the amount of viewers than the typical TV3 Wednesday line up. There would have been less leakage tonight to ITV as ITV 4 is not available FTA in HD. The Ireland v Canada game only just made it to 9th spot when you'd have expected that match to be second only to the All Ireland Final. The lack of a TV3 HD picture to more than half the population is having an impact.

There were figures announced from Nielsen on Monday which said Saorview has taken over Sky as the largest TV platform in Ireland.

http://www.saorview.ie/news/saorview-now-the-largest-tv-platform-in-ireland/

Saorview is in 1st place with 646,000 homes.
Sky is in 2nd place with 645,000 homes.

A difference of 1,000 homes in the Republic of Ireland.

To be honest I'm surprised that Saorview isn't almost universal, it's a free service (license fee aside) so I have it on my TV alongside Sky.

More to do with UPC than Sky - most UPC homes have no other TV service. Every channel on Saorview is on UPC (unlike Sky, for now - this will change shortly). Moreover UPC's still running analogue service plays the role Saorview does in other homes of supplying TV to sets without boxes.

It's referenced in the Press release that 'a number' of Households have a FTA satellite service with Saorview. I would presume that practically every household that uses FTA Sat in the republic (approx 33%) would have Saorview as well. It's actually an excellent selection of stations when you combine the two. Obviously there are about 10% of households that have Saorview only but there are people out there that aren't really into TV Shocked
