The rate card for Saorview, which guarentees 2rn a certain income from each multiplex no matter how many channels are on it, makes it very difficult for channels that aren't owned by RTE to join the platform.

That's mostly TV3's own fault, if they had paid their bills on time in the past the current formula for stations paying for Saorview would probably be very different. However, It would be an extra 1.5 million to go to HD appox a year. While that's a large amount, it would probably mean much larger audiences...

I've tried looking for some more information on this but I'm not really sure what to look for, can someone explain how this works, please? Any channel that wants to broadcast on one of the Saorview multiplexes has to pay an equal share of €2million, divided between all the channels being carried on it? Do RTÉ have to pay or are they exempt?

Here's the rate card:

RTE do have to pay, but they are effectively paying themselves.

For those interested in old RTE presentation, it looks like RTE's new comedy series Après Match of the Day might be a gold mine. For those not in the know, Après Match is a very long running sketch slot that has run after RTE football coverage during major tournaments. This half hour version sees the team do skit commentary of old football matches, in this case the Republic of Ireland v Romania in the 1990 World Cup. Where the pres angle comes in is that they took mock "commercial breaks", during which we got treated to the (by 1990 long dropped!) 1986 RTE2 ident, a mid-1980s RTE News title sequence (also long dropped by 1990!), and parodies of advertising of the day.

TV3 Rugby ident aired prior to "The Sin Bin" tonight - captioned "We ruck, we scrum".

It seems that UTV Ireland's new on air identity debuts tommorow.

That didn't last long then.

They admitted early on that the original branding didn't work, didn't they? Though of course if ITV buys UTV, this second branding could prove equally shortlived.

That particular story seems to have died away for the time being.

Harking back in a way to the old "UTV is yoUr TV".

Is the "Ireland" being dropped from the channel logo then? And will we see any on air changes at UTV NI, I wonder.
