Tommy Bowe has joined the Ireland AM presenting team on Virgin Media as part of their new autumn schedule released today.

Didn't realise they were looking for a new winger.

RTÉ News Now has been renamed simply RTÉ News on screen.

And dropping “Now” from the logo is virtually the only change that’s occurred to the tv channel (well, the date and time also looks a bit nicer). Incidentally when I tuned in this morning, Morning Ireland was on and I heard a reference to “RTÉ News Now” within two minutes. (I suppose it makes a change from the days when mainstream RTÉ News seemed to be unaware it even existed - believe it or not it started way back in the chocolate brown era).

The app has seen a bit of a refresh but not particularly substantive changes either. (Apart from a new blue splash screen, the biggest change I noticed was the “Live” is now on the left hand side instead of the right).

Nothing to get too excited about. Brief video footage in the article:

RTE News Now is still under threat from closure. Dee Forbes, RTE Director General and other management have said they want to close it down, and not surprising, since there is hardly any new dedicated news programming on the channel, simply simulcasts of RTE One news bulletins and Morning Ireland from RTE Radio 1.

I feel the morning simulcast of Morning Ireland is wasted on RTE News Now, and moving it to RTE One from 7am to 9am would be better, possibly gaining slightly more audience, but not much of course, as RTE audience for their television stations at 7am is minute anyway, as most of Ireland watch the British breakfast shows from Sky, BBC or ITV.

Virgin Media One Schedule for Tuesday September 1st 2020:

8.30pm - Red Rock

Are they reruns? I thought it had been axed.

In January, yes. Presumably whatever was meant to replace it wasn't made due to COVID, so they brought it back for a repeat run.

SUPERB! At last RTE listened, and they ditched the botched version they launched last September. Well done RTE.

I wouldn’t say that yet until after the start of next weeks show - they used extended one-off (or intended to be; they used them again for a show later in the season) titles for the first show of last year. I couldn’t see them running a title sequence of that length every week; indeed if the break bumpers (still using the horrible 2009 Brian Byrne arrangement, even if the house band appears to be gone) are anything to go by I would be surprised if there is any dramatic difference between last year and this years title sequences.

If they managed to keep just the original Late Late Show intro music from the Gay Byrne era, and dump the botched, chopped version launched last year, then I am happy with that. I know the extended version would not be used every week, but if they can at least keep the original opening from the Byrne era, that is fine.

Met Eiréann have another meteorologist appearing on their RTÉ One TV weather forecasts. Her name is Linda Hughes. She has been doing weather forecasts for RTÉ Radio for the past year or so. But in recent times; she is now making some frequent appearances on the TV weather forecasts for Met Eiréann on RTÉ One. She did weather forecasts last week & after the Six-One News earlier this evening.
