From a non Republic of Ireland viewpoint what is amazing about this schedule is 2 hrs 30 minutes of religious programming in the morning. That seems mad!

RTÉ 1 stills airs a Mass service every Sunday of the year as well, despite Ireland not been the very religious country anymore that it once was.

I find it weird that someone would find it mad that there is religious programming on a very important Christian holyday

They air a religious service every Sunday .

Mass is only on every second week and that has been the case for years on TV and is the case for the last year or 2 on radio .

Not Really, The BBC is showing 2 hours 20 minutes of Religious Programming across BBC 1 and 2 that Morning. Plus The Archbishops Christmas Message is something like the Queens Christmas Message and is about as religious. It used to be on at 6 but they moved it up to a time which has a lot less people watching. What they don't tend to do is break up Religious programmes across the Channels. I think one year they had all the Religion on RTE 2 and Entertainment on 1.

Plus isn't this what Public Service Broadcasting is all about. Religion would certainly not be as important today to the vast Majority of people in Britain or Ireland but there are still some that value it. On top of that it has no commercial value whatsoever.

Religious programming, for an historical perspective, was one programme genres which were exempt from the tight broadcasting hours allowed during the course of the year on the BBC and ITV until 1972, so there is somewhat of a hangover of this rule still in place at the BBC.

ITV had literally dumped all religious programming during the course of the year, their public service remit must be very loose, the closest to religion over Christmas on ITV is their usual carols programme, scheduled this Christmas Eve at 11.50pm.

A question regarding the Angelus. Is it compulsory for RTE One to broadcast it?

No.

Though in an odd move in recent years, they’ve broadcast it on Good Friday and Easter Saturday, when church bells shouldn’t be rung.

IIRC ITV are still obliged to air a single hour of religious programming each year and this is how they meet that quota.

A recent survey was done and 2/3 of people said they wanted to keep the Angelus.

I have to wonder why they have that one hour quota per year, I mean it is pointless.

Is there a new Young Offenders Christmas special or is that a repeat of the one from last year?

Probably the best comedy around at the moment.
