There was plans for that years ago, but not anymore. They probably don’t have the money.

The Irish Mail On Sunday is reporting that RTÉ is to sell its studios in Cork. The paper says they are also cutting pay, laying off more staff, and selling more land at Montrose.

I wonder what will happen to the programmes that broadcast from Cork if they sell the studios. John Creedon’s radio programme and Today with Maura and Daithi on RTÉ 1 are currently broadcast from Cork. I’m sure there are other programmes as well. Maybe they’ll lease back the studio space or maybe these programmes will be axed or moved elsewhere?

To be fair, the RTE building in Cork, does look far too big for what comes out of it. And on Ft Matthew Street, is in a prime 'knock it down and bulid apartments overlooking the River Lee' development side.

They could move to a much smaller place on the massive enterprise zone on the hill next to the airport, have a small modern tv studio, fit out a couple of radio studios, production offices, and even shut the Limerick studio of RTE Lyric FM down and move it to Cork.

RTE Radio 1 have plenty of radio studios in Dublin at the radio centre at Montrose, so if they wanted, they could easily accommodate his show at Montrose.

Today Show could easily move out of Cork and into Studio 2 at Donnybrook. So there is plenty of space for the shows in Dublin, if they consolidated their studio facilities to Dublin.

RTE Lyric FM could easily be moved to Dublin, and the Limerick building sold off. Having just one national station in Limerick seems to be a waste of money, and moving it into the radio centre at Montrose would be cost effective. They have plenty of studios at the radio centre to accommodate RTE Radio 1, 2FM and Lyric FM.

I am sorry, but now in 2019, RTE needs to be realists and understand having studios in Limerick and Cork are just not needed now, and if they are to save money, they have to consolidate into one complex - Dublin.

I am not being Dublin centrist - I am being realistic.

The RTE Radio Centre in Montrose has 13 radio studios, all underground, and can easily accommodate three main stations programming of Radio 1, 2FM and Lyric FM.

I wonder why RTE decided to base Lyric FM in Limerick? I understand why they have RTE Raidio na Gaeltachta based in Galway, the heart of the Gaelic speaking area, but Limerick for classical music?

That was true but it would have only been available on weekdays and then they decided to just go for RTÈ One + 1

Before that it was going to be called RTÈ international and made available on Freesat but again nice idea but not practical financially.

Well Nationwide is made by RTÉ Cork as well. Would the closure of the Cork studio at Fr Matthew Street will mean that the programme will move over to a smaller studio in Cork or move over to Dublin in future?

The Minster for communications wouldn't allow it . It wasn't RTE's decision

If you thought there was bitching about the BBC being London centric you ain't seen nothing yet if they tried to shut all faculties in Cork
