I wonder if anyone has tried internet television software like
CTube? 1500+ channels with no cable bills sounds very appealing, but what's the quality of the video?

You do know that it is free to try.

And why bother paying when you can do it for free with Real Player and Media Player and http://wwitv.com/ ?

Looking at the stations lists, the majority are common to both.

As for quality, don't expect too much - especially with 28Kb/s streams!

On the other hand there are some streams of 700-800kbps which can look pretty watchable. Not as good as broadcast TV - but not terrible either.

SVT24 looks pretty good (and I think that is around the 400-500kbps mark)

Now that 8Mbs broadband is becoming available at a sensible price - then webcasting at the 500k mark is becoming more feasible.

(I notice the Slingbox has launched in the US - this is a box you connect to your Sky / Tivo / Cable box etc. and your broadband connection - and it lets you stream video to your PC when you are not at home. You could be in New York, Sydney or Moscow and watching and remotely controlling your Sky receiveer etc. as if you were at home - albeit at about 500kbps quality. Still watchable though)

I've been very interested in the Slingbox, and contacted them through their website to see if there are plans for a UK version. It's limited by your upload speed though, and my telewest 1MB connection only has 128k upload (apparently it was 256 and was reduced).

I'd have to subscribe to a 4MB connection just to get 384k up, so it's a product for the semi-distant future for me. It's still too pricey.

It's own website used to carry an audio-only stream but that appears to have disappeared now.
