In Greece, the stations have launched their new idents for the 2008/2009 season.
ANT1 have launched a complete new look for the station. Firstly, they have dropped the old logo in favor of this new updated version.

Never thought that would happen, still it's nearly twenty years...

Mega Channel have decided to continue with the 'Megalicious' slogan for the 2008/2009 and have released four Megalicious idents.

Cute, but can't beat 2005-2006

Star Channel were also long overdue for a new look.

Too true - and it still can't get it right.

I take back that last comment about Star: having seen more of the look here, it's pretty smart.

I have to agree that Star is looking better than ever this year. The new idents are so much more stylish and well made compared to the past.

The new Megalicious idents are growing on me but I'm still not so sure.

Hello,

I would like to introduce some identity of what it was, in my opinion, one of the best evolutions in television branding and, possibly, one of the best identity concepts ever made.

I'm talking of the rebranding of the two public portuguese channels RTP1 and RTP2, which occurred on April 29, 1996. Before this date, they were called "Canal 1" and "TV2" respectively, and there was no common link between them in terms of identity.

TV2 ident - 1993
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YP-_TFWSI1U&fmt=18

As you may see, the idents were somewhat awful when compared to the ones of the BBC at that time.

But, from 1996, the two channels became RTP1 and RTP2. It is quite possible that the idents were made by an international company (Lambie-Nairn, for example), because they are somewhat good and creative.

RTP1 ident - "1 falling into water backwards"

RTP1 ident - "lamp" + ad bumper

RTP2 ident - "typewriter" (the background chorus is singing "two" in portuguese)

RTP2 ident - "child"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yB-FZSDC6cw&fmt=18

There were many more for each channel. But, by 1999, the ident set was replaced.

Well, I would like to know your opinion on these ident sets. Are they creative when compared to other European public broadcasters?

Glad to see they have updated their presentation. Any changes made to the set for the main bulletins on RTP1?

Often whilst I'm in Portugal watching I cant help but think of the original Channel 5 News set when watching the bulletins!

Does RTP even have voiceovers for menus or promos?

No. The scenario continues exactly the same since 7th March 2004, only with the addition of an electronic panel for weather forecast. Chroma key is still used in some parts of "Telejornal" (the main newscast of RTP1, aired on primetime; although I actually use the word Telejornal to refer to the whole of RTP1 newscasts) to present graphics and interactive data, or simply to replace the actual set whenever it is on maintenance.

Only the set of RTP2's Jornal 2 was affected, because it was shared with the former set of RTPN in Lisbon. Nowadays, RTP2 uses a crappy chroma key scenario to replace the former.

In promos? Yes, but they are pre-recorded. Since 2003 there are no live voiceovers or continuity presenters on RTP channels. Program menus and schedules only have background music with the theme song of the channel.

Also unlike other public channels in Europe, RTP1 has only one ident in use, instead of a variety of idents. Even RTP2 and RTPN have various idents in use (with the former having CGI stripes idents, and the latter having several location idents). RTP channels aren't broadcast in 16:9 24/7, only some movies and series are broadcast in letterbox Pal Plus (not anamorphic).

Of the public channels in Europe, I think RTP, TVE in Spain, RAI in Italy and ERT in Greece are the only broadcasters which don't use the 16:9 standard 24/7.

Europe is very small by your standards, including those within the EU or not.

Sorry, I meant European Union. I also forgot to add Romania's TVR and Bulgaria's BNT.
