Interim/Temporary branding

Does anyone have anymore examples of this? (January 2017)

There was of course CBBC's 2001 refresh, some months before the CBBC channel and CBeebies launched.

There was a de-brand of sorts before this, over the summer holidays most of the CBBC block didn't use the standard cartoony idents, instead using a short sequence of kids mucking around in the BP garden doing summery stuff with "Let's Dance" by Five in the background. Similarly prior to the 2013 ITV1 revamp the promos changed to a really dull black endboard.
Rule 1 of a relaunch: run down the old look before you change it so the new one seems impressive. BBC1 might have found that a challenge lately...

They mixed the idents, began to air in 16:9, and gave the studio its biggest change by getting rid of the large 1997 desk and covering the studio walls. Both the idents and studio looked better than it had done previously. It was done to begin to separate the brands with the younger programmes (what would be CBeebies) having their own version of the mixed idents and v/o only into the programmes.

The v/o was generally only done on CBBC One as BBC Two had one presenter doing the pre-school links.

Unless that's their long term plan. Anything can be better than this current couple of idents.

These lasted about a week in 1998 before being inexplicably withdrawn.

The idents remained for a few months but the end shot changed to just the 4 in a single circle over an out of focus screen.

Wasn't it because it drew comparisons to Channel 5's logo at the time?

Not sure how - the look was completely different.
Besides, if anything, it's C5 who ripped off C4, which introduced the number in a circle design in 1996, a year before Channel Five launched. The implementation was different, but their logos were similar at the time.

And also of course there's often the case that a new person will come in with their own ideas and have to work with what they've got, and then relaunch it with their own designs. It's like on Top of the Pops, when Ric Blaxill took over as producer in 1994 he immediately re-edited the opening titles and fiddled with the graphics, because he didn't like the old ones (rightly so, they were crap) and then introduced a completely new set a year later. And then similarly, when Chris Cowey replaced Blaxill in 1997, he immediately changed the bits of Blaxill's graphics he didn't like, and then introduced a new look within a year.

Often in these cases it's more to do with getting the old branding off ASAP rather than getting new branding on.

One which hasn't been mentioned yet: UTV's rebrand of July 2000, only necessitated by C-Day - or the switch to widescreen presentation:

https://tvr.metropol247.co.uk/thetvroom.com/itv/itv-utv-06-01.html

Taking a slight lead from ITV network trail animations of the time, the idents themselves reused footage from the channel's 1996 set of landscape idents, the rarely-seen TV You barker, and a commercial for UTV advertising sales.

This was the set of idents which had the URL of UTV's then-launched ISP, UTV Internet - itself using what would become the 2000-2016 UTV on-screen logo. These were quickly got removed as soon as the ITC twigged on to them (and didn't Granada do a similar thing back in the G-Wizz days?)

What was the difference, just a re-edit of the idents and new straps?

By that point the yellow branding had more than out-lived its welcome. A new look was designed for CBBC but never materialised on air, presumably because the channels were in the pipeline and they were waiting for them. That design wasn't dissimilar to what they used in 2005, though a sphere rather than a blob.

Looks like they were just trying to squeeze another few months out and liven up the dullness of the yellow branding

No, the regular yellow CBBC idents remained around programming for younger children, while the 'remixed' idents were introduced for everything else. It was a concerted effort to split CBBC into two separate brands.

The regional websites were hosted on the g-wizz domain. The address was advertised on screen for a year or so, long enough that LWT's video wall ident was introduced before it was changed. They then switched back to fully local domains before advertising ITV.com instead.

It was even more than that too, as he ditched the "no miming" policy and axed the presenters (Mark Franklin and Tony Dortie) and bought back the Radio 1 DJs- both changes that had been made at the same time those titles came in (and the show moved to Elstree) and neither of which I think were seen as a success.

And one thing about Chris Cowie coming in is he dramatically cut the amount of music videos shown, as before then you'd definately get at least one video a week, which the chart rundown from 40-11 was run over (and there were usually more), whereas after he took over you could often go weeks without there being a video on the show (and even then it was often only the number 1 that had its video shown, as the act couldn't perform). In fact looking at Popscene in the late 90s/early 00s, you could often go a couple of months without a non-number one video being shown.

I guess by then more people were getting satellite and cable and music channels were taking over and were showing videos all day, so they wanted TOTP to offer an alternative by being nearly all performances? In fact during that era they even only showed clips from the music videos during the chart rundown if there hadn't been a performance.

Another TOTP example - in 2001, they had a big revamp when the show went widescreen and moved back to Television Centre (billed as 'Top of the Pops Goes Large'). The titles and graphics were given a 3D makeover (as seen here). They also introduced the Star Bar and the TOTP Awards.

This turned out to be short lived as Chris Cowey was replaced by Andi Peters and just over two years later the show had another, much bigger revamp as the newly-titled 'All New Top of the Pops', and the Star Bar and TOTP Awards were scrapped.

Here's an Independent article from the time: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/media/revamped-top-of-the-pops-returns-to-old-home-after-a-decade-in-exile-9217880.html
