When they changed, ITV claimed the old idents were only "phase one" of the rebranding. Funny that "phase one" only lasted 10 months, but "phase two" lasted over 6 years.
North West Tonight introduced a great new look in September 2007 only for it to be replaced in April 2008 with the full BBC News rebrand. Again I don't think that was intended, more likely the NWT team didn't know the big rebrand was coming.
ITV did the exact same thing. Calendar, Granada Reports, and Anglia News all launched new looks less than a year before the first generic rebrand.
CBBC:
Updated their presentation in 2014 with two new idents, a slightly recoloured studio and an iOS7 style menu graphic alongside their CBBC GO App. This was a soft launch into their big revamp last year where they replaced the logo.
Newsround slightly reworked their music in 2014 prior to the full relaunch with new music. They also introduced a new DOG and Astons. See the below two videos as the music change was minuscule.
2008 theme
2014 theme, slightly lower than the previous introduced before the major relaunch
What was the difference, just a re-edit of the idents and new straps?
By that point the yellow branding had more than out-lived its welcome. A new look was designed for CBBC but never materialised on air, presumably because the channels were in the pipeline and they were waiting for them. That design wasn't dissimilar to what they used in 2005, though a sphere rather than a blob.
Looks like they were just trying to squeeze another few months out and liven up the dullness of the yellow branding

I didn't think the original 2006 emotions idents were too bad really, only thing I didn't like was how the logo opened up awkwardly. I always thought that looked stupid. The music on them was good, some of the scenes were a little off-putting like the man rubbing his belly and the kid pushing his tooth with his tongue, but most were fine.
Don't know why ITV said it was only phase 1, what was that supposed to mean? There was nothing even remotely similar between those idents and the Brighter Side idents that followed, which admittedly I also liked, apart from the music. I never understood why in 2010 when they launched some new idents with improved music (sunflowers, dodgems etc) they didn't update the music on the other idents to give them all their own unique versions of the soundtrack. Would have freshened them up so much.
They mixed the idents, began to air in 16:9, and gave the studio its biggest change by getting rid of the large 1997 desk and covering the studio walls. Both the idents and studio looked better than it had done previously. It was done to begin to separate the brands with the younger programmes (what would be CBeebies) having their own version of the mixed idents and v/o only into the programmes.
Did S4C do it for a few months prior to their 2007 relaunch? I'll try and find a cap. It was shot of some tvs flashing different images and the audio had some people going "ahhhhhh"
