"One of the best TV branding examples in recent times was the balloon over Britain idents, the wonderful images the BBC used to evoke British pride and by association pride in the BBC. The demise of this particular branding device illustrates one of my key branding theories - the "KISS" principal, "Keep It Simple Stupid". When the balloon was simple it worked, when it got complicated, by trying to introduce ethnic imagery, ie the Notting Hill Carnival, the balloon became secondary, the idea became complex and the idents lost their charm, and consequently their value."

I agree entirely!

Quite a decent article but didn't really tell us anything we didn't already know!

Why didn't he talk more about the ITV1 branding?

Here are my list of favourite idents/branding:-

five,
Channel 4,
Paramount Comedy,
E4,
ITV1,
QVC,
BBC Three.

A varied selection, im sure you will agree?

My favourite branding at the moment is National Geographic I think it looks great, simple and clear with the whole concept based around their logo.

In contrast though I also like France 1, it's quirky and fun.

The new 4 idents are the best on terrestrial.

France 1?

There's a France 2, 3 and 5 - and soon to be a digital exclusive France 4 - but not a France 1.

I assume you mean TF1.

I have mixed opinions on this article.
Some things I do believe he's right about, like the BBC One balloon, etc.

It's when he gets on to talk about things like Channel 4...
More recently, the new Channel 4 identity is much talked about because it's new and it's different, two key elements in branding, but technical wizardry doesn't necessarily sell, and I'm not convinced that the idents reflect the core values of the channel.

Where as when I see the idents I see them as distinctive, original, well thought out, and something that you wouldn't see on any other channel, which in my mind sums up Channel 4 brilliantly.

Also...
Remember that branding reflects the programming; it doesn't work the other way around. Today the Five rebrand is beautifully simple, reflecting tiny slices of life we can all relate to, and while I'm impressed that Five recently got a huge shark to physically chew up its logo off the coast of South Africa, this may be the first step that takes them out of their clearly defined space and back a few steps into the "adventure programme... adventure ident" scenario.

The five rebrand didn't really reflect life to me. If I was a red haired female driving a car, or sat on a rowing machine all day maybe.
The new idents take the logo and play on that with an influence from the programmes that the channel provides, they add character to an otherwise dull and boring identity, they play around with a simple text based logo and even made that appear like a well thought out brand.

I won't dwell on ITV, as we created their current identity, but this branding means business. It's what we've called "Grafting", replacing the time spent on spinning idents with short programme snippets, designed to excite viewers about what's up next, and to me that works in a 400-channel environment.

I wouldn't mind if this practice was actually used all of the time, and if it was thought out before creating them. Technically it is a spining ident, with bits of clips only in prime time and that's it.

If the idents looked different and the programme clips were inserted more than in a rectangle in the middle of an ident.
They work ok, but I'd much prefer to see channel 4's vast menu with programme details through the day/night with well created and thought out idents, perhaps that's me though.

I cant say I agree with everything, they actually prefered Sky One as a tits and bum channel, and didnt like the 1998 idents which are some of the best IMO

But they did design the 1995-1997 looks for sky, and they are great and they loved the balloon!!
