Why do people insist on constantly slagging them off based on made up stats "they are handing BBC1 the ratings on a plate"?
It's in black and white that since ITV dropped CITV, ratings have more than doubled in the afternoons
I have no qualms with the dropping of CITV, but filling it with repeats is hardly a good thing.
The peaktime schedule leaves a lot to be desired, and sticking up for blanket soaps (7.5 hours a week in total) simply because they "pull in the viewers" is unfounded and stupid.
Ratings may have improved but ITV's reputation has took a big blow with the loss of it's children's output - especially as the schedule is dominated by repeats. They could easily squeeze in an hour of CITV into their afternoon schedules and still have room for some of their additional programming.
To be fair though on ITV their afternoon line up is no worse than the BBC's morning line up, who seem to have about three different programmes broadcast under a dozen different names!
Personally I'm not against the dropping of CITV (unpopular opinion, I know) but I am against drama repeats and cheap spin-offs like 'Dancing on Ice Exclusive' and 'Corrie Confidential' taking its place. Channel 4 has successfully invested in a strong afternoon line-up and ITV could learn a thing or two from them.

It's lazy, simple as.
Soaps in most of the 7pm-9pm slots is very lazy indeed. Where is the variety? Ive been saying for a while they should bring back gameshows instead of Emmerdale every day (except Saturday!)
The afternoon schedule is dreadful - repeats of old dramas and programmes about (yes you guessed it!) soaps and reality tv. Very little variety.
The problem I have with them dropping CITV is they've just given up on children's programmes rather than saying "ratings are low - how can we improve them for CITV".
And there is an obvious solution to that problem too - but ITV you'll have to pay me if you want the answer.

I agree. The peaktime schedule is incredibly bland and dull. It's dominated by the soaps. I think we should be losing the second Monday episode of Corrie at the very least, and maybe even the Sunday episode. Emmerdale should also drop the Sunday episode. I do think that weekends should be soap free.

Completely agree, and ive been waiting for this to happen for the last 3-4 years! But unfortunately I cant see it happening anytime soon.
When
ITV
was good, I remember crying at the end of the series' of shows like "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" - (I was young!! ) But now with
ITV
tiring out series' like WWTBAM?, Corrie and Emmerdale, and playing awful replay-after-replay of others, I think some fresh material is needed - and all programmes should be banned from plugging these bloody phone lines!
Michael Grade should seriously get off his arse and do something to resurrect the channel whilst it still has a chance!! Because at the moment, it can only go downhill.
Of course, at one time, such gaps could have been filled by low budget regional shows, or some regions could have negotiated repeat fees for higher budget shows in their archive at a cheaper rate because they were only going to screen them in their own region, rather than nationally.

what there DID today is a GREAT start: with all those Crap ££££ phone gameshows! gone
I don't see a problem with ITV1 replaying some of their stock of dramas during the afternoon. CITV, Cbeebies and CBBC are available for children which should be plenty enough choice for them.
Although I like my soaps, I do think they could improve them by removing the Sunday episodes and the 2nd Corrie on Monday. The peaktime schedules are far too static on weeknights up to about 9pm.
I'm not sure what they should broadcast instead during these slots, but they have enough people on huge salaries who are paid to come up with a solution which could restore the channel's reputation.
