And how is keeping the soaps at 5 or 6 episodes a week going to help improve ITV?

Because they are universally popular and pull in double the average ITV1 audience share ?

They'd be hard pressed to find anything to replace them that would do so well, that's the hard commercial truth.

Fair point, but then again ITV1 was only just ahead of BBC One in peaktime last year and BBC One only broadcasts four episodes of EastEnders, one episode of Holby and one of Casualty, compared to a whopping six episodes of Emmerdale, five episodes of Coronation Street and two episodes of The Bill. Now surely if they (BBC One) can manage to find programming that can help them attract a large share in peaktime without resorting to filling up the schedule with endless soaps, I'm sure ITV could if they wanted to.

Quite, but it's not the soap aspect of the schedule that is failing is it ? It's the rest, and they have been experimenting with that with mixed results.

The soaps are central to their commercial interests, and you have to accept that the rest of the schedule needs to be built around and strengthened by the soaps.

ITV1 has 5.5 hours at least a week when they have 40% of the nations eyeballs, yet they don't make the most of that inheritance. The soaps are not the problem, they are part of the solution.

And the rest of the problem is daytime which reduces their overall share, maybe time for another daytime soap ? Laughing

ITV1 was over 2 share points ahead of BBC1 in peak time last year so not 'just ahead'

The same difference between that and how far BBC1 are ahead of ITV1 in all day share

ITV need to stop the obsession with celebrity (even disguising the brand as All Star) and if it means cutting down reality TV shows then so be it.

Secondly, DITCH ITV PLAY - the only programme that worked with true viewer interaction was Quizmania and thats gone so scrap it! Personally it now just screams of profit-making waffle.

Thirdly, put Supermarket Sweep back in the 9.25am slot, I get the feeling Dale was forced back to host this show and personally it just feels awkward in the 5pm slot. If they want a gameshow at 5pm then stick Catchphrase on etc.

..Thats all for now..

Impractical.
An 1 hour of Supermarket Sweep?? 30 minutes is gruelling enough, the new version is nowhere near as good as its older counterpart.

In my opinion, GMTV should extend until 10, with This Morning until 12, then Supermarket Sweep, then the News, then Loose Women at 1, Everwood at 2 and CITV from 3 till 5, leading into a decent chat/quiz show (No Joe Pasquale's Price Is Right though.. tacky!!!)

I agree about SS - it would be better at 9.25am like it was before.

They cant extend GMTV to 10am as its franchise hours at 6am-9.25am.

I wouldn't change much at all, the schedule is fine the way it is, all I'd say is move the Lunchtime News to either 12.30pm or 1.00pm, but otherwise IMO it's the actual programming. They just need to stop relying on this celebrity bull, but I'm not saying anything at the moment as since January alot of ITV's output has vastly improved and more money and effort seem to be coming into the schedule now such as Primeval, Benidorm and Where Has My Pension Gone to name a few.

Alot better than this time last year and so far Mr Shaps isn't doing such a bad job.

I know you did! But I would really love to see Shortland Street back in a regular slot!
