Lets face it, ITV is a mess. How would you improve its main channel ITV1 - is it a case of recommissionning better shows or do bigger changes need to be made to change people's thinking?
Take Primeval if on BBC1 it would have been more popular and probably better recieved... how can ITV change this image????
ITV1 is in much better shape than it's BBC equivalent.
Primetime is pretty much sorted across the week - it's just needs to swing the balance ever so slightly away from soap and get some primetime comedy in the schedule. Most of the celeb reality shows need forgetting too - only exceptions being I'm a Celeb and Dancing on Ice.
Daytimes - well, no problems with the mornings but the afternoons are a mess - and reinstating CITV would be the obvious place to start.
The late night schedules have been killed off by the arrival of The Mint and co. - but you need to remember the sort of crap they used to screen overnight before. I think though the ITV Play programming shouldn't creep into the schedules earlier than 1am, allowing a clear two hour block after the news for films and other programming.

what crap: like prison cell block H, Dating shows repeats of Triash, and Tonight,
also STV filled half the repeat of Scotland today and North tonight, along with some US comedy's like coach and something closets, lets be honest Night-time TV has only lasted about: 16 years at the very most!
stv now uses it to show gelice programmes and BBC use it to show Deaf programmes, there no one really up at that time of the night, if there are there doing MORE important things, like working, playing games, partying or having
anyway Nigh time is not that important so I don;t mind this mint rubbish on at midnight - 4am
Less soaps for one thing. Less reality television as well. They've got Laura Mackie on board so I'd say the future of the drama department is looking better than it has done for a long time, and the Jane Austen season looks promising. More comedy perhaps. The news needs looking at as well. They've done a good job with Saturday nights with a varied schedule so there seems to be something for everybody, and perhaps they should implement that on the rest of the week.
Not everybody wants to watch two hours of soaps so they need to start scheduling shows for a broader audience. Six episodes of Emmerdale is not good. Nor is five episodes of Coronation Street. The Bill should also be dropping an episode.
Cut back on the episodes of the soaps to 3 half hour episodes a week - plus a 1 hour long episode of The Bill. Have some kind of entertainment programme in the 7-8pm Sunday slot. In the 7pm slot dont have Emmerdale everynight like it is now (yawn) - have more quiz shows like there used to be.
Late Nights and Afternoons I agree also need attention. Although im not sure bringing back CITV will work in terms of viewing figures.
I wish people would stop going on about ITV "going back to its regional roots". For a start, setting that up again would involve a huge amount of investment and for what gain? More people won't tune in just because the idents say Granada again.
