The 1 o'clock news intro at the time......white clock rather like Star Wars flying about the inside rim of the clock up to the figure '1' was good - liked the theme too - variation of that theme was used for the Afternoon update on BBC2 wasn't it?

Yeah - at least by the later 80s (I think, tho' stand to be corrected) they used the first bit of the theme. The presenter was in the studio with the newsroom behind and there was the digital time above his head.

There must be a picture somewhere that explains that better than I can . . . !

This stopped when the current square BBC logo was introduced - you aren't allowed to animate the current logo - especially by breaking it up into discrete elements...

Has anyone seen the BBC Big Read leaflet in libraries? It has the logo stacked down the left side:

B
B
C

I thought this was a strict no-no as well?

The logo is also like this on the artist's impressions of the Mailbox.

I always thought of that One as being like going down a bob sleigh run.

Indeed ... when NSE introduced their new titles in 1997 (IIRC), we thought they'd broken this rule by flying in the "B", "B" and "C" separately to form the logo, but on closer examination it was the whole logo whizzing in across the screen at high speed. Still looked a bit naff though Laughing

Yup - the rule is "The logo must not be altered in any circumstances."

The stacked logo has typically been the logo simply rotated 90 degrees. That shop front would probably have the logo displayed THAT way.

Probably just a misunderstanding between the brief and the designer, as to what "vertically stacked" meant.

Fish Fingers for me! Great graphics, great music and the charming voice of Mr Patrick Lunt, booming out the newsreaders' names.

Err - the logo hasn't been rotated through 90 degrees, the individual components of the logo have. That is the distinction - the actual logo has been altered to create the stacked version. In design terms the logo exists as a single element - not as three individual letters... It may seem daft - but that was the rule.

That said I think Mr Lambie-Nairn doesn't quite have the complete control that he may once have had. (Witness the regions varying from the corporate look more flexibly...)

** EDIT ** But re-reading your post I think we agree!

Fish Fingers was my most favourite, followed by the Six with the deck of cards.

I remember Martin Lewis being interviewed on Wogan shortly before the Death-Star One O'Clock news. Am I right in thinking there was a fire in the studio a couple of days before the new look started?

You have to see the video. They move really quick and so look longer.
