Clearly you haven't seen the advert which states that walking a mile burns the same amount of calories (?) as running a mile etc. Or a brisk 30 minute walk is the same as a 30 minute run etc.
It's the distance you travel that counts not how fast you do it. So going around the block I'd imagine is the same distance no matter how fast your going
I think what actually counts is probably the fact I'm losing weight at a slow and steady pace, and feeling much clearer and refreshed each time.
About four years ago I hadn't really done much walking, then I started college and once had to walk a long distance from the college to a park. It was the longest I had ever walked in one go, and I think I really over-did it. I honestly thought my legs were just gone, and nearly fell over a few times (I must have looked slightly p*ssed, but I done my best to hide this unusual pain I was in) - but I had to keep going because I was in a group and they were already miles infront. I was sweating, and my chest was killing me. I've been told it was some sort of mini heart attack, it was really painful and I think it was at that point I decided I had to do something to change. I had to walk all the way back to the college first though!
But when you reach a point like that, I think you seriously have to start changing things. For me, little things like how far I walk or how fast I was walking didn't (and still doesn't) really matter, as long as I'm doing something, and a little more when I can. I can't say the things I eat have changed that much, but how much I eat certainly has. I definitely feel a lot better being able to run about with the kids, these days its usually them running out of breath and I'm still going!
*Tries to tie this in with TV presentation* Er... so yes, in a way it's much like the ITV News opening, looking much healthier these days. Still a lot of room for improvement though

I lost nearly a stone by cutting down on stuff and going for a quick walk round the block or two every night - the reason I go at night is because its colder, so I walk quicker to warm up.
Wibble wobble.
