Whose bright spark idea was it to show an ident before each programme anyway? It never used to be done that way. The BBC would show their globe, and the clock before the news, but the globe could hardly be classed as an ident as such, there was no form-up etc. YTV just used to show a rotating Y logo, and right up until just before the C3NE period came in, TTTV only used to show their ident before a local programme or before the news, with a static version or IVC always used at other times. That way when the full ident was shown, it had far more impact than they do now.
It seems that these things only really started to become popular in the early 90's as a means of signifying the start of a programme, and yet now they are everywhere, and the other options (usually some form of optic, rather than a 10-second animation) have all but gone. Why is that?

Idents help promote and make people remember their channel. In an increasingly competitive multi channel world, broadcasters need to be bold and different.
BBC Two are scrapping their 20 or so idents in favour of 4 new computer generated monstrosities!

I Like this new style anyway the 6 new ones that came in 2000 were computerised anyway but of course your the man who hates BBC & Loves ITV
Yes, but the point is that people remember styles far more than graphics. I don't think the stations look bold and different because of the current way idents are used, I think it makes them all look uniform and anonymous.
Why are stations all sticking to the same style of trailer-ads-trailer-ident-programme which doesn't stick out one bit?
IMHO the 4 main networks looked far more individual in the 1980's than they do now!!!

This is what I think makes the new look Big 2 better the caption been over to one side make them stand out like the BBC Choice ones. Anyway not all corporate looks are exactly the same take the sky channels only Sk Sport 1,2 & 3 are the same but Sky One looks diffrent, It is the same with C4 & E4
The point I'm making though is that people will notice far more if a different approach to continuity was taken, rather than all stations following each other sheep-like.
One thing that has struck me getting all ITV regions is how
deathly dull
they all are -- every last one of them with the possible exception of UTV which at least makes some effort to look different some of the time. There is no effort to be original, there are some nice graphics but the art of good continuity seems to have gone out the window in favour of cost-cutting and 'branding'.

Actually yes I have to agree with you in actual fact Tyne Tees is the most stupid as they have two diffrent logos running at once.
Well, GMG North is an extreme example (in particular TTTV with it's identity crisis) but I still think you're missing my central point. They're ALL bad! And not because the idents are duff....

I might be totally wrong in my points but honestly, I didn't think they were that hard to comprehend...
