Hi,

So, can television identity be pretentiously campy or flashy? I'm asking this because I just can't get this ident out of my head:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6AFtGCmqt8&fmt=18

It was used for exactly 5 years by Portuguese TV channel SIC. From the very first day (October 6 1992) to October 6 1997.

This one is indeed campy because of flashy tune, the rainbow and 3-d logotype and the "in your face" appearance of the logotype.

"campy" ? Think that is a very american term to be using round these parts? The UK equivalent is "camp" - without the y!

I suppose you're right but I think most idents from that era were anyway.

I mean look at Sky's Tombstone era. Various bold colours with flowing fabrics draped over the logo accompanied by dramatic orchestral music... They may as well have just had Joan Rivers throwing on a feather boa with the channel name stuck to her forehead.

That wasn't really that camp.

Wow. A discussion about whether idents are camp or butch. And I thought the Greater Manchester discussion was breaking the mould.

This one's a lot worse - from 1992

Yes, the ident I posted was in fact a cut of that longer start-up sequence, which is made up of several 'Globo' idents from the seventies and eighties. Redji Globo (the brazilian network) was one of the founders of SIC (which held a share of 15%, the maximum allowed for a foreign company to own in a media company in Portugal at that time).

But early Sky idents are nothing compared to the campness of SIC. The logotype seems like a smiling child's face painted with a rainbow, with the letters 'SIC' forming the eyes. Now imagine that 'printed' as a large and colourful DOG during movies and programming...

This is a video with the general layout used for program promos, idents, continuity and prog list in the mid nineties.

Nevertheless, SIC was a great channel at that time, with a wide choice of movies, britcoms and factual programming. In recent years the good content has moved to pay-tv channels (SIC Woman, News, Radical, etc...), while the main SIC broadcasts sensationalist and illiterate talk shows during daytime.

I think this is the most camp ident ident ever. It does exist with an even more dodgy theme somewhere, complete with popping sound effect when the ball hits the racquet.
