Identify the announcer

Can anybody identify the announcer in this clip?

I'm pretty sure it sounds like Classic FM presenter Simon Bates, but I don't know whether he was ever an announcer.

There's also another clip on YouTube of the BBC1 OU startup from the same day, but it hasn't got any sound on it (both were taken from TV Ark) - I'm probably wrong but I think it could have been the same announcer as I have watched both clips previously...

Not sure who it is but I can tell you that Simon Bates did in-vision continuity for a time with ATV in the seventies.

It definitely sounds like Simon "You've said far more than enough this evening, so why don't you just shut up?" Bates.

Funny his name has come up tonight, given the discussion in the ITV West thread about public meetings discussing whether the West and South-West regions should merge.

Simon "Didn't you hear what I said the last time?" Bates chaired all the "It's Your BBC" public meetings in this area and got mighty fed up when I went to about five of them to argue for the regions being merged.

After the first meeting, he'd obviously been told that the "party line" was not to let me speak, so he got pretty rude from the chair every time I stood up.

I, therefore, have little or no time for the silly man.

Am I watching the same clip? That doesn't sound a bit like Simon Bates.
