Can an ident be abandoned?

The Golden Hour ones were legit - the first time they did it as a one off Moyles namechecked Jon Woolfort and thanks him for permission. Presumably when it became a regular fixture they licensed the ones they used.

The issue was when Moyles was on the early show, he used some old jingles like the "Britain's favourite" TOTH cut for the "6 o'clock moment" feature. He also had some parody versions of Simon Mayo era Breakfast Show jingles (which possibly Sandy Beech had produced rather than JAM, which didn't help matters). I think I saw a quote from Jon W to the effect that he would normally have let it go but he felt he had to make an issue of it after the way JAM had been treated when they lost the contract.

This may be an urban myth, but didn't the original Channel 4 idents get a new sound track to avoid royalty payments for FourScore?

There was a BBC One Rythm and Movement idents that mysteriously got a new soundtrack not long after it launched, which was speculated to be a rights problem.

It's the reason why Radio 2 changed their jingle signature a couple of years ago, it was only a subtle change but the new one had a better contractual deal so are cheaper

Yes that was a weird one where they were paying their previous provider for the rights to the logo and the new one for the rights to the jingles themselves.

What is the copyright status for idents and promos?

The same as they are for programmes

Are they normally accompanied by paperwork detailing matters relating to the copyright as they are produced for sole use by the TV channel and are not networked or sold?

Not in the same way as a programme does because they'll be shown for a bit and then never seen again.

Some idents will contain components from third parties - such as music - but is the usually practice for the TV company to pay a one-off royalty for unlimited use or a royalty payment every time the ident is used?

It would be silly to agree to pay every time. It will either be a one-off payment or payment to clear it for a certain amount of time.

Commercial music will be paid for via the normal performing rights routes.

Therefore, can an ident be abandoned even if the TV company that used it no longer exists?

I don't understand the question, if the TV company still exists why would its copyright be 'abandoned'?

It's fairly unusual for something to just drop into the public domain except after a certain number of years (75 after the death of the author?) when things automatically do. The intellectual property of a company that ceases to exist will still be owned by someone.

Do you mean the copyright of the design of the Logo/Branding and the music? If so, then it depends entirely on the deal struck with the broadcaster in the first place. Most brand identities are 'bought out' as part of the original contract to produce graphics and music to indentift a broadcaster/station etc. So the BBC, for example, commissioned Martin Lambie Nairn for the original 1991 BBC TWO set of idents and soundtracks and licensed them to be used as required. I'm not sure if they had to be relicensed when they were re-introduced, or whether the copyright of the design transferred to the BBC.

Is what you're asking, who owns the copyright to station idents for stations which no longer exist (at least on screen) like the Central 'Cake' the HTV aerial etc... If so, then there probably isn't a definitive answer, certainly not one that fits all.

Were there issues with the Alt-J soundtracks on the BBC 2 idents or am I remembering things incorrectly?

Wasn’t this the reason why S4C ditched their S4/C look as it was cheaper to film the low cost ones they went for that renew the copyright for the logo and idents? I’m sure I read that on here. I remember it was when their finances were particularly poor and many were surprised that they’d launched a new look.

Yes, look at TVS

It clearly states that it is a digital remake of our Fleur de Lys bumper logo, but...

Tumbler. Though apparently Scotland kept the original one?

I found an old post by Spencer for Hire who thinks it sounds similar to a Fatboy Slim song, so that might be why they changed it

The itv 2009 lantern ident was scrapped soon after it launched. This was because of farmers complaining that it encouraged people to use them that caused fires on their farm I believe...

Alot of the Oneness idents seem to have been abandoned. Swimmers, Exercise Class and Birdwatchers haven't been seen for ages, and I haven't seen Tandem Cyclists one for months so assuming it's gone as well. Pity they can't all go away.

And ofc, the BBC2 Crystal Ball ident only lasted a few weeks.

That wasn’t because of a copyright issue though, it was because it was felt that the ‘2’ wasn’t ever seen on screen for long enough.
