Why I like regional news

There was a very funny moment on North West Tonight last night when presenter Tony Morris was linking to a report about the start of the new football season. He decided to stop halfway through and go 'Aaaah, football. Sorry, I can't help it.' They could never do that on national news!

In fact, Martin Henfield has just been handed back to in the studio on North West Today after a report on the second most beautiful building in the country (Ikea? Who compiles these things?), to which he simply said 'No Comment'. Great stuff!

Why can't national news be more like this? I know 5 News is occasionally, but it does make the programme a lot more watchable!

My signature is my Jim Royle-style response to all of the BBC News 24 loving people who use this forum, even though Sky News and ITN are clearly better.

Could you explain how ITN is better than BBC News 24? I thought almost everyone agreed that the 'ITN News Channel' (terrible name) was the worst 24 hour news channel in the UK. I haven't watched much of it, but if it is anything like their news on ITV then I don't see how it could be better than BBC News 24.

Oh dear oh dear, here we go again. I like the ITN News Channel, and I don't believe that we have agreed such a thing about it being the worst at all. The only thing wrong about ITN at the moment is the astons and some of their graphics, but other than that it is fine. The whole BBC News 24 thing is an ongoing debate in this forum, but I always have thought that it is not particularly a very good channel. It's alright, but I prefer ITN and Sky News.

But let's not reignite this debate, eh?

Yes, we've had this debate far too many times.
ITN is a niche channel. It's not designed to compete with News 24 or Sky News.
I'd also argue that News 24 and Sky News are not, or should not be competing with each other, as they both have very differing definitions of a 'news channel'.

Sorry, didn't realise this was an old debate. It just surprised me that's all, as you're the first person I know who actually likes ITN News! When I said 'almost everyone agreed' I meant generally, not this particular forum.

Back on topic, I think regional news lends itself more to lighthearted comments because a lot of the news is trivial. National news on the other hand is usually about more serious subjects, such as war etc.

Ah well, you're new, so I'll let you off!

It's a shame that national news is so serious. But then hey, it wouldn't really be news if it wasn't! The ITN News Channel do actually sometimes have really funny comments by one of their presenters, Owen Thomas, who is really good. He was on the other day and was doing the weather, but the weather graphics went off before promptly reappearing. He started laughing and pointed out to the viewers how the 'pretty pictures have now reappeared'. I'd like to see more things like this on national BBC and ITV news.

Yes I agree with you about North West Today. It really is great. Nice to see Martin Henfield presenting the lunchtime programme today. I can't believe Ikea in Warrington Gemini Retail Park (down the road from me!) can possibly be in the top 50 most beautiful buildings! Its a warehouse for God's sake!

i think regional news should always be more relaxed that the national news as it is always a chattier programme is it is LOCAL affiars.

They should also have more fun with the grafix

on Reportig Scotland the other week they had a story about a parrot that spoke in a abberdeen accent with the aston saying

CHA CHA
Parrot

which the national news would neva do

I remember on The Boulton Factor on Sky News, they interviewed the cat from the Monster Raving Looney Party.
The aston read:

MANDU
Leader of the MRLP

Very amusing - they of course had the owner in, who is also leader of the party.
The cat's name is Mandu, as in Cat Mandu or Katmandu - capital of Tibet.
