He was removed as host because the continuing revelations in the papers were overshadowing the shows being taped in those weeks. You cant blame Merton or Hislop for seizing the comedy moments where they could though.
Deyton's suitability or not has nothing to do with it. The guest hosts have made a big difference to the ratings; and has reinvigorated a show that is a decade old. I made a point of tuning in just to see who was presenting, and how well they coped with Hislop and Merton. In fact it was interesting enough to keep a thread running here on the forum
It would be plain daft to change what has become a more successful formula.

When I used to write for The News Huddlines, Punt and Dennis would use the writers room at Broadcasting House before us, and passed us to let us in. Hugh to me always seemed rather low, and depressed... but this was only the impression I formed from him walking past.
HIGNFY wise, I'm sure, guest presenter aside, our thoughts are with Paul so soon after the death of his wife.

I spoke to one of the guest hosts of last series, Hugh Dennis (real name Peter), and he was under the impression that the guest hosting would be permanent. Not a bad idea IMO - that is - until they run out of celebrities to host it!

The basic fact is that HIGNFY is a topical news satirical quiz show. That is its roots and it would do well to stick to them. By having a new guest presenter each week you end up spending a lot of time seeing the said presenter "tested" by Merton and Hislop- which isn't necessarily topical satire. Depending on the quality of the presenter this can be absolutely fantastic (e.g. Boris) or pretty dire (e.g. Anne Robinson).
That isn't to say there can't be more than one permanent presenter- perhaps a rota of 3 or 4, so that after one series all the jokes about the presenter's past etc. have been aired and they can concentrate on proper satire, like they did when Angus was around.
BTW, I think Jack Dee would make an excellent permanent host, but we'll have to wait and see this Friday.

I think Ian had every right to treat angus that way. For years the three of them have been rediculing people who have behaved badly; and then angus went and did the same sort of thing. It's not that he took drugs, it's that he became a hypocrit; and from that moment on he couldn't continue. Plus; Ian has a right to disapprove of Angus and others in my opinion; because he manages to conduct his life a hell of alot better than almost everyone else in the public eye. At least he wasn't being a hypocrit when he made a judgement about Angus.
Anyway as much as I liked Angus he wasn't a great loss. He didn't write his own lines and was incabable of spontaneous humour - he was just the Straight guy for Paul's jokes.

Well the new series starts tomorrow night, so presumably the filming is tonight. I know one of the guests is Clement Freud, but does anyone know who else is on.
I reckon Jack Dee will do splendidly as guest host- his deadpan humour is similar to Angus' old 'straight guy' style, I just hope they don't overscript him.

There's no question of Angus coming back, because Ian and Paul were both genuinely angry with his actions. Paul Merton has said that he doesn't like Angus at all, and Ian Hislop's comments on 'that show' about Z-list celebrities having sex with each other weren't meant humorously.
The chemistry wouldn't be there if Angus returned now. Too much bad blood's been spilled.

Who would people like to see as guest presenters? I reckon lots of the news types would be quite good - Jeremy Paxman, Jeremy Vine, Bill Turnbull to name but three, all of whom have the right combination of intelligence, dry wit and cutting sarcasm to pull it off IMHO.

For me, there's no question. Gotta be Martin Clunes. Through - what, two series of guest hosts, he's the only one the rest of the family have actually commented "God, he was good - give him the job..."
He was natural, quick-witted - perfect and - dare I say it - better than Angus, IMHO.

Actually you haven't got a bad idea there - could be interesting to see! Who do we email to suggest it?
