this isnt 100% to do with this topic but it beats creating a new thread.

theres been alot of talk about the way in which bbc and itv regions will (hopefully) be available outside their broadcast area on digital tv... i thought to recieve these new services you would need digital sattelite reciever (ie sky)

BUT i was reading a piece on the government's 'communications white paper' website about regional anomolies... and here's the conclusion he draws:

5. Digital Terrestrial Television - The Regional Anomaly Answer

The advent of Digital Terrestrial Television is an ideal opportunity to realign regions on geographical rather than governmental regions and so maximise coverage from particular transmitters. However this realignment may be structurally difficult.

An easier proposal uses the many available channels of Digital Terrestrial Television to allow for the transmission of adjacent regional broadcasts . In addition to the 'free' channels BBC1, BBC2, ITV, C4, S4C and C5, 3-4 channels could be made available for broadcast content from adjacent regions.

This last proposal, if well publicised as a way of solving regional anomalies, would speed the transition to Digital Terrestrial Television.

wow! it is only in its early stages and is by no means on the table - but the government ARE thinking about it atleast!!!!
i hope im not increadibly slow or something and everyone else knew about this (if thats the case delete this post)

the reason im so enthusiastic is im more enclined to get itvdigital, as i dont want a sattelite dish, you cant move the reciever round the house, and i dont want to line murdochs pockets with my cash.

if anyone wants to find the complete article at this URL:

Yes - I think broadcasting 'other' neighbouring regions on each transmitter would help sort out the regional anomalies. However it would need a lot more space - some regions overlap with three others.

It would perhaps be possible to use the extra frequencies freed up when analogue is shut down - but I think the government is hoping to free these to sell them off. (But given the last sale of spectrum for 3G Phones hasn't gone brilliantly this may be less of a reason)

Of course if ITV Digital folds, there will be three multiplexes free - and perhaps the BBC/ITV could expand to fill these. This would allow BBC Interactive video services that are broadcast on satellite to be broadcast on digital terrestrial , and also allow BBC Parliament to have pictures as well as sound!

It will only be a matter of time before ITV Digital has the plug pulled. Already Carlton and Granada are in financial trouble, they can't sustain a loss making service like ITV Digital.   It was a brave move taking on such a flawed test project.
What will happen in my opinion is that the free to air channels BBC ITV C5 C4 will continue to broadcast but the premier services will end, allowing space for adjacent regions to broadcast, or BSKYB and  NTL will provide a few select digital channels such as Sky News and Sky One.

Are the BBC regions on DSat only going to be on BBC One or on BBC Two as well? as the news report only said 'English Regional Services' or words to that affect. Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland have their regional BBC 2 (availiable to all). Are the BBC 1 nations availiable to all or is it just BBC 2 nations?
