I bought a newspaper with a pull - out of the television schedules for the Christmas period. Unsurprisingly most of the ' programmes ' are the usual offerings for this time of year.
Isn' t it odd that the real meaning of Christmas is sacrificed just for the sake of boosting ' ratings ' for these TV companies ? I notice the usual drivel about the Beckhams and something about Pop Idol or whatever it is.
Why can't companies screen programmes that educate our children as to what the real purpose of christmas is - namely the sacrifice made on the cross by our Lord Jesus Christ. Why do we never hear about some of the unsung heroes of yesteryear such as the Three Wise Men? Surely a reconstructed documentary would be both insightful and enjoyable concerning these three remarkable men. Others could also be commemorated in such a way. It would be better if the whole schedule for 25 December was given over completely to cover programmes about Jesus and his birth. For example there could be programmes looking at Bethlehem and how it has changed since Jesus' birth both economically and socially as well as aesthetically. Jesus' life history and the history of his family would also make stimulating viewing. I just hope the TV companies are reading this.
Did you know Jesus' death is not marked by Christmas. Also, The Three Wise Men did not arrive until January 6th.

What became Christmas was celebrated a long time before the "birth of Jesus". It was originally a pagan feast, so it's just come full circle now.

Yeah, I'm sure Tyne Tees will find a slot. Would 3.25am do?
Yes! Hurrah for Ceefax Xmas! Great renditions of festive tunes... even a few organ renditions of Christmas songs! I got up about 4:55am and recorded Ceefax, unfortunately all technology to record the music is back home in London so I am recording the next few nights on a 240 minute VHS on Long play... so I should have a few Minidiscs worth to transfer when I get back! It makes excellent background music! Although I'm still waiting for my favourite Ceefax Xmas tune (a version of Jingle Bells that has female voices singing "la la la la la la la la la la la" etc...) Think it's called Jingle Bell Medley... (or maybe that's the name of the Ceefax MD it's on?
Interestingly, there was rather a long gap in music between 5 and 6am this morning, the minidisc must've ended, and I'm sure there were a couple of tunes that got played twice! What was even better was there was a version of "Greensleeves" towards the end of Ceefax, but it finished just before Ceefax did, so they ended properly!
(Does anyone really consider "Greensleeves" to be Christmas music?)
Can't believe I made the mistake of relating the Good Lord's crucifixion to Christmas ! On the idea of christmas programmes how about screening school christmas nativity plays from around the country. Surely this would really get into the heart of what Christmas is all about. Also how about a programme looking into the cultural significance of the crib as well as it's long history ? You see, all it needs is a little bit of imagination, of which our ponderous and staid TV companies have none ! It's the same material every year ! I think I speak for all of us when I say that I am heartily sick of the repetitiveness of the Christmas schedules !
This was actually meant to be a new topic but due to a technical problem it somehow got placed in this Ceefax thread. Apologies to the topic starter as the initial thread is now off topic.

But it's not what Christmas is all about!
Anyway, doesn't This Morning have schools come in an put on nativity plays?

So what exactly is it about then - commercialism ? People like you make me sick.
