Some real treats for vintage pres fans in this show. Thames TV colour cameras accurately recreated in the Opportunity Knocks scenes, and the famous skyline itself visible on monitors. In the scene where Hughie visits the head of Children's TV, the receptionist sat in front of a huge silhouette of the Thames skyline, with "Children's Television" replacing the word Thames. But in that same scene, a Pipkins logo was seen hanging on the head of childrens' wall - didn't anyone tell the makers Pipkins was made by ATV?

As the story moved into the 1980s, we saw Hughie flick through the channels on his TV to be greeted by period idents from BBC1, BBC2 and C4. Mysteriously though, he didn't switch on to ITV - hard to believe that some authentic Thames IVC could not be found (although perhaps this was deliberate to convey Hughie's strained relationship with his local ITV provider).

The old camera equipment for some of the series (presumably the Hughie Green one too) came from http://www.golden-agetv.co.uk/

Great series so far

I noticed that about Pipkins too!

Did Hughie falling down the stairs ever go out originally?

I remember seeing some odd old clips of him. Strange fellow.

This was a particularly embarrassing howler as not only is Pipkins available on DVD, there are also unrealeased episodes doing the rounds, so the question of who made the show is easily verifiable.

As for "The Sky's The Limit" scenes, were those graphics accurate? The typeface used for the title looked too much like a modern mobile phone font.

This programme was very good, and Trevor Eve's portrayal was inspired - the voice was uncannily accurate. I did enjoy seeing some of the old titles (I'm guessing the Opportunity Knocks one was genuine, or a good re-creation)

As a child I always disliked Hughie Green. His comments on screen were anything but "most sincere". Having seen that programme I think that my perception was quite accurate. Quite a nasty man indeed, although he's not around to defend his reputation. This programme was based on a book co-authored by his son, I believe, so perhaps can't be entirely devoid of truth.

Did anybody spot the map ident in The Curse of Steptoe and Son? I don't know if it was genuine, but it was the version where you can see the map through the BBC tv letters in the logo, plus it was shown doing it's thing where it starts as the circle and the map appears a second or so later.

Not entirely accurate, but you can tell that they've made an effort with the series.

I thought it was a nice touch having clips of Paula on The Tube and The Big Breakfast.

Although Hughie came across as a self-centred womaniser, it was quite sad at the end when he was trying to get Paula's attention.

Trevor Eve's portrayal was brilliant although apparently Jess Yates's voice wasn't accurate..?

Yes, but you would have to question the motives there. He had ignored his own children, yet seemed to have a facination about the illegitimate one he knew of, perhaps because she was successful. It was, if anything, a sad story about someone unable to create a real bond with anyone on an emotional level - he was never able to leave the facade of the stage.

I've seen Jess Yates on video clips and Benton's portrayal was good enough considering it wasn't the lead role. Eve was very good though, you couldn't fault him and I am increasingly surprised at his abilitites in drama.

He had a Northern accent but not a Geordie one.
