Well Yorkshire used the 5:30pm slot for Tonight, the regional magazine show, followed by Calendar. But they then shifted the regional slot to lunchtime (hence Live Lunch) and 5:30pm became the home of 'Wheel of Fortune' and now 'The People Versus'. 5.10pm has always been networked, either 'Home and Away' or now 'Crossroads'.

IIRC, Central was one of the only regions if not the only region to seperate its regional news.

5:40 ITN News
6:00 Home & Away
6:30 Central News

This was because Central also broadcast Shortland Street at 5:10 whereas other regions only put it on at lunchtime so for most regions Home & Away went at 5:10.

Thats right, I think! Smile

I'm highly suprished that Lookaround Gets more viewers thatn Look North.

Look North is a fantastic high quality programme when lookaround is, frankly, a pile of bullss*** as one of my friends put it....
'Today on Lookaround - the sheep that crossed the road AND SAT DOWN!!!'

Yeah but you have to remember, Look North covers the North East and Cumbria, whereas Lookaround only covers Cumbria.
Most of the NE news on Look North will not be of interest to viewers in Cumbria.
That is why it will get higher viewing figures.
The same applies to Scotland Today and North Tonight and London Tonight and Meridian Tonight.

Thats why Central News South gets good viewing figures. In the days of NRSE, no-one in Oxford wanted to know what was going on in London or Dover so people turned to Central which was offering a better service.

Now the opt outs have started on South Today, I think its attracting a few viewers back but many people prefer Central News, because they prefer news from the locality (even if its not related to them) rather than Southampton or the Isle Of Wight.

Also Central News South operates all the time, it may have a slightly bigger coverage area but many of its stories are Oxfordshire related.

South Today Oxford only operates for 15 minutes a day.

I thought Lookaround covered South Scotland as well?

Mmm isn't Neighbours still getting ratings of around 8 or 9 million viewers these days? Not bad really...

As for my region, well you have a choice of Anglia News and Look East and I think Look East wins by a mile for quality (but then the less said about Anglia the better...)

That is the same situation with my Dad too.  We always used to get in and watch the 5:40 because it was the first news programme on when you got home from work, and the BBC was showing Neighbours.  Once you had seen that, there seemed to be little point turning over to the BBC 6 O'Clock News, you just stuck with Calendar.

Now that ITV have brought back News at Ten, (which is considered to be during prime-time), they have no requirement to show the news at 6:30pm.  With the failing popularity of Neighbours, perhaps ITV should bring back the News at 5:40, as follows

5:10pm Crossroads
5:40pm ITV Early Evening News
6pm Calendar
6.30pm The People Versus

The News at Ten should be reinstated to the full 30 minutes, and be on at 10.  I know that the ITC were concerned about the drop in ITV's regional programming, so this may happen.  I also expect that it could happen when ITV introduce the new soap 'Night & Day', with it taking the 6:30pm slot, (not sure where else it will go).

Night & Day will cost Crossroads one of its two timeslots. (the lunchtime one I think)
