It seems that Hospital Studios are involved in the UK part of the concert.

Yep - think they are (or were) owned by Dave Stewart (half of the Eurythmics, who were heavily involved in charitable stuff in the days of Band Aid). I believe the crew covering the concerts are doing it for free. It is also one of the only HD studios in London - and MTV is HD in the US now. (Which may be why they aren't using MTV's Camden studios - or they may have prior commitments?)

It's not one of the only HD studios in London - there are plenty. And MTV's Camden studios are HD as they provide some shows for the MTVNHD channel.

My friend was offered the Stage Manager job but unfortunately had prior commitments. I was surprised to see Beyonce perform in the London studio.

The Hospital was the UK's first HD studio (apart possibly from Sky - though I think they were a bit later in upgrading). Sky have a number of HD studios on their site - but AFAIK they are not available to 3rd parties. The BBC were the first to upgrade their major London studios to HD - and are still the main HD studio providers on the open market for decent sized shows.

However I suspect Dave Stewarts association with The Hospital explains its use for the Haiti concerts?

When did MTV in Camden upgrade to HD ? They certainly still only list SD cameras and infrastructure on their website - and people I know working on BBC shows there have certainly not mentioned it. (The cameras listed for Studios A, B and C are all Thomson 1657s - which were the first generation 16:9 cameras used at BBC TVC until they started replacing them with Sony SD E30 and HD HDC1500 models a few years ago. There are a couple of 1657 studios left - but not many - as they're not great cameras and haven't aged at all well.)

MTVN HD shows some 16:9 SD upconverted stuff as well as native HD - just because a show is on there doesn't mean it is HD. (In the US 16:9 SD is routinely upconverted and shown on HD outlets - as they don't have many 16:9 SD outlets - all their major SD outlets and SD platforms are 4:3 only)

The London Studios has announced an HD upgrade - but I don't know if it is complete yet (They've used Arena HD OB trucks parked outside to shoot HD shows there in the past - Arena is a distant cousin of LWT's old OB division ISTR).

Fountain were upgrading to HD - and I think now have - but I don't know of any shows that have shot in HD there (though I guess Sky1 stuff is being shot somewhere!)

Teddington studios is still also SD only (they hire in stuff for HD sit-coms - but it is de-rig style), and I'm pretty certain Arqiva is SD only too. Capital Group have shut up shop, and AFAIK Molinare is still SD. Stephen Street claim HD - but this is by using an OB truck. I don't know of any other major players with HD studios in London. Riverside in Hammersmith still only have SD cameras (though they may be upgrading their infrastructure to allow HD cameras to be rented in?)

BBC Studios have TC1, 4 and 8 fully upgraded to HD, and another in the pipeline, along with the ability to temporarily install HD kit in their SD studios for simple shows.

So - apart from The Hospital, BBC Studios and Sky - where are the "plenty of HD studios"? ( TLS and Fountain still only list SD facilities on their websites - but by the middle of this year I'd expect them to be HD if they aren't already?)

Doesn't Angela and Friends use MTV Studios? That is in HD.

Could be - maybe they've upgraded their studio and not their website, or have done what Teddington do (and the BBC have done in the past) and hire a de-rig for the "bare minimum" HD kit into an SD studio for pre-recorded shows, and then rip it out later.

All that said - TT1657s are ancient cameras, so they may have upgraded. Looking around it does appear that they were in the process of upgrading their galleries as well - as they've just installed a Christie multi-viewer solution to replace their CRT stack.

I can onlt think of at least one other, but like Sky's it's not hireable
