Will we in effect catch up though? The difference stays the same give or take a few weeks doesnt it?
I know that in Neighbours, it was about weeks difference to the 2005 Finale last year.
Yes, if five continue to show Home and Away every weekday evening then we should have caught up by Christmas 2008, unless 7 take Home and Away off for the Olympics, when we would have caught up by the end of the games.
They'll be allowed to catch up, but not overtake I imagine - though as Five throw in 50% of the funding for it, I don't see why not!
The likely situation is we'll probably end up 2-3 weeks behind so while the Aussie season finale usually airs around the 1st Dec, here it'll probably stay on air until just before Christmas.
However, considering now the time between original airings and UK airings of series is getting shorter and shorter, there is no reason why it couldn't air on 7 and Five the same day - though it'll be a few hours earlier on 7. That would probably prevent the Five Life first look episodes though.

Neighbours is taken off for breaks for the Tennis in the Summer and also over Christmas. It was also until recently taken off for Bank Holidays.
H&A doesnt take any breaks over here which is why we catch up to quickly but the reality is they will have to take a break sooner or later, even if we did overtake the Oz episodes we would still eventually run out of episodes to screen if they didnt take a break.
Well they could aim to air the 2007 Finale on Friday 21st December, then they can start showing a week after 7 comes back from the xmas break.
That would mean a long break for us between 21st December and the end of January. I wouldnt be surprised if Five took it off for 2 weeks here and 2 weeks there like the BBC do with Neighbours.
But what would they do that for, i mean what would they tell viewers? Were taking it of now to show your repeats of Everybody Hates Chris?
Well they will have to take a break sometime. ITV used to just take a break whenever we got too close to the Oz episodes. Usually they would drop it on a Friday so we would fall behind.

4 week for Xmas
3 days at easter, their could also not show it on a Bank holiday
there
As I said (about three or four pages ago I'm sure ) I'd rather have one long break over Christmas and continuing in January than the show randomly disappearing at intervals throughout the year. I also think Five need to try and keep to the schedule of screening a week's worth of episodes in the same week (i.e. eps scheduled Mon-Fri on 7 also air Mon-Fri on Five).
The best solution is for Five to commission some sort of US teen drama or something to run in the 6pm slot throughout January.
